Americans are fatter than ever. Here's why. It's not what you've been told.

Some suppplements shrink tumors while others make them grow faster, depending on one's metabolism. Which metabolism do you have?

There are three major causes of obesity that are rarely, if ever, discussed in the media

When I was in grade school in the 1950s, I was usually the only fat kid in class. Today nearly 1 child in 3 is either overweight or obese, according the the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation.

We didn't used to be so fat... I've seen the difference with my own eyes...and so have you if you've lived long enough. There's an eye-opening progression map that demonstrates that our collective fatness is new. (See video below.)

We seem to be powerless against this huge problem, but I promise you, I won't leave you without real solutions.

First let's deflate a few myths

We aren't fat because of TV's or Gameboys. Allow me to suggest to you that those props are a result rather than the cause obesity. If a child is highly energetic and healthy, he's going to be bored by TV and Xboxes. He'll want to run around outside instead.

But today's children are less healthy and their energy levels are lower than the children of previous generations. As a result, the less energetic child finds solace in watching TV and sitting in front of a computer.

There are three undiscussed reasons for our fatness

We aren't the only ones who are putting on the pounds quickly, by the way. Look at any chicken, cow or pig...the ones we eat every day. Those animals are packing on the pounds like nobody's business.

Back in the day, a chicken might weigh two pounds after 16 weeks of life. Now they weigh twice that. The chickens don't have access to Ho Ho's, donuts, ice cream, chocolate chip cookies and the like. But they still pack on the pounds.

That's because they are being given HORMONES. Guess what happens to you if you eat chicken, beef or pork from an animal that has been given hormones TO MAKE HIM FAT all his or her life? Yup. We swallow tiny bits of those hormones - daily - for years!

But it's not just meat. Non organically raised fruits and vegetables also get doused with some of the fake estrogens.

That's right, you'll be swallowing some nasty hormones that can make you larger than you want to be. These hormones are called xenoestrogens. I call them fake estrogens.

These fake estogens are also found in plastic wrap, beauty products, laundry detergent, softeners etc. The list of products we use sometimes daily is too long to include here. The list probably increases as time passes.

The second real cause of our fatness

In the early 1970s Coke, Pepsi and the rest of the soft drink makers stopped using sugar and replaced it with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS.) Many, many foods are also now loaded with HFCS now.

That's no biggie, right? Both sugar and HFCS bad for you, that's for sure. But HFCS might as well be renamed "Have some Fat in the 'Can,' Sucker."

That's because HFCS increases a hunger hormone in your body. The hormone is called Ghrelin. So you eat the HFCS food, AND you end up eating everything else because you're still hungry.

Real cause # 3 is a real Lulu

You probably don't remember the first time you were given antibiotics. Most likely you had a stuffed up nose and ears, so your mom took you to the pediatrician.

To get the full explanation on why antibiotics make us fat, you'll want to see my hub on food cravings. But here is the shorthand explanation. Antibiotics promote yeast growth in our body. Yeast live on sugar and so does our brain. This is true for both men and women.

When the yeast, which is in our intestines and therefore gets first dibs on any sugar, eats up the sugar that our brain needs, your brain will tell you, "Hey, I'm DYING up here! Get me some food with some sugar in it!"

So off you go to the kitchen to snack on some cookies or ice cream, or whatever it is that suits your fancy. Result? Weight gain.

That's why in all 50 US states we have a situation where at least 55% of the adults are overweight. A mere 25 years ago, only four states fell into that category. That's a twelvefold increase!

The trend is not going to stop. In fact, the obesity crisis will continue to grow worse. There is no end in sight. And it will continue so long as we blame the wrong things for our collective fatness. The result is that some day soon there will be too many sick people to be able to take care of them effectively.

There are some things we can do to correct the situation. The first is to only eat meat that has no added hormones in it. Some grocery stores carry hormone free meat. For example, Publix carries "Greenwise" beef and chicken. Maverick is another hormone free meat. If yours doesn't, ask them to start.

Also the supplement DIM helps to reverse the effects of too much fake estrogen in our systems. So do supplements that contain indole-3-carbinol. Both of those products are available at health food stores.

The excess of fake estrogens helps to explain why girls are reaching puberty earlier than before while boys are seeing a delay. In later life these bad estrogens cause cancer, hair loss and thinning, and a lower sex drive, to name just a few of the problems.

As for the HFCS, it's going to be tough to change our habits until we end our yeast overgrowths. I've seen lots of people who have reversed their yeast problems with a combination of olive leaf extract, glutamine, caprylic acid and PB-8 (an excellent probiotic.) All of those are available at health food stores.

For children, I would use a line of products called Threelac. They have different products for different ages of children.

My entire progam is discussed in another one of my hub pages.

Once the yeast is back under control, the desire to eat those foods made with HFCS in them goes away effortlessly. I mean is will power is required whatsover.

With this you'll have the solution for you and your family. The next step will be to tell everyone you know because if we don't, the US is on a slippery slide to ruin through obesity and the resulting arthritis, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's, etc.

This is no joke, and it's not hyperbole. Childhood obesity has tripled in the last 25 years. Those children will be fatter than we are presently when they grow up. And there will be more obese Americans...even more than there are now.

We aren't that healthy as a nation today. Today's children can expect to be sicker than today's adults with chronic diseases striking them at even younger ages than we see now.

How does the US survive if half the 40-year old's become disabled by their obesity and disease...the same diseases that are now striking people when they are 60 or 70? So we must act and act quickly to save not only our families but our communities and our country.

Don't wait for the next guy to step forward. You are the next guy.

I am looking for the article you posted about indigestion/candida issues some years ago. It involved Intestinew PB8 Carylic Acid and Olive Leaf Extract I can't find the article and am having problems again. It really worked for me and now I need it again as I regressed and am having problems again. Thank you.

      Hi Mary,

      Thanks for sharing this, Mary.

Just to be clear, there is no yeast in antibiotics. But the antibiotics allow the yeast we all have in our intestines to flourish.

      The best to you.

Very informative. I did not know about the yeast in antibiotics, though I should have known. Luckily though, I opt for natural healing techniques. So, it's been many, many years since I've taken antibiotics. I've also already overcome the other two components. I'm passing this one on.

Kelly Eidem ...great article. It is so hard for people to even find the proper food. In the small town that I live ..the section of clean food is so small that it leaves people thinking that it is not necessary to even eat it. I have to drive 10 to 15 miles to get a little bigger choice of clean foods. I am sure this is the reason that people are so heavy. Even if they want clean food ...they can't find it.

Now my daughter lives in an area that is affluent and she has at least 3 grocery stores that are all organic in her area. The difference of the children in that area is they are very slim. Perhaps you would only see one or two children in a class room that are a little over weight.

It is really sad to see how hard we have to struggle to even eat as a result ..I search and search for good food in our area.

So my words to you who have just read Kelley's article ...don't ever give up ...believe what he says and do your homework is worth your life!

      Hi Chuck,

There have always been intestinal worms. (Things like garlic and other herbs help protect us from them.) Worms don't cause weight gain, but they can cause weight loss.

The explosion in obesity has occurred in the last half century or so, and particularly in the last 20 years. Since that is the case, we need to look at what has changed in the last half century and then in the last 20 years.

Antibiotics were used on a widespread basis with soldiers since WWII (penicillin) and with the public at large in the 50's with the introduction of Tetracyclene in 1955.

Sure enough we started gaining weight after that.

Then in the 1970's high fructose corn syrup took off. So then more of us started getting fatter.

As for the fake estrogens, known as xenoestrogens, more and more has been introduced into our lives with each passing decade. They help to explain why there is at least 55% over weight adults in each of the 50 states.

Today, many states have 30% obesity in adults. I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't have 50% obesity in most states by the years 2020.

There is no end in sight with this obesity epidemic.

Of course, a nation can't sustain itself with that much obesity and morbidity. IOW, we might be only a decade or so way from collapsing from within.

We need to stop feeding xenoestrogens to livestock and we must start taking - on a wide scale - DIM and/or indole-3 methane. (I'm not recommending government force, just individual responsibility.)

The veggies you mention have DIM and indole-3 carbinol in them, so it's a good start. Our exposure to xenoestrogens can be so high these days that it would probably take far more than what is in those vegetables to counteract an over exposure.

      The best to you.

I saw on another site that broccoli, cauliflower, (sp?)cabbage, brussel sprouts, etc, will get rid of some excess estrogen. Yet another site says that intestinal worms are part of the problem.

Thank you so much Kelley, I am very excited that you like my website.

I of course have been browsing the rest of your articles and your content is awesome.

The one about your yeast protocol for weight loss is a blessing. I've tried candida cleanses before but I've never come close to this whole 3 step protocol.

I'm going to try it and I pray that it works. The cravings are rediculous!

I know the benefits of probiotics as well. My son has been on then since he was born! He is a very healthy little boy.

Thank you again Kelley for your wonderful information and please, please keep writing.

AH! What an ah-ha moment. I had never thought of tv and video games as a result rather than a cause of childhood obesity.

      That makes perfect sense.

As does your "undiscussed" reasons for obesity. I completely agree with every one of them. This is an excellent article that I will be giving a "trackback" to on my blog.

We need to wake up and smell the coffee and realize that there is no such thing as "a quantity so small that it does not affect our bodies" when we consume it every day for years.

There was an expose on Whole Foods done by one of the major TV channels, either NBC or ABC. Have no idea if it is still available, but this was the gist... Anyone shopping whole foods needs to check the country of origin in small print on the back of frozen food. "Organic California" veggies (of some sort) on the back actually came from China! Whole Foods chose not to respond. Sad!

The point of this is that we need to be ever vigilant in our choices of what we purchase. Avoid over processed food and choose fresh whenever possible....and as you say, choose hormone free. Not an easy task!

Good hub! Going to check out some of those suggested things in health food stores. Thanks Kelley!

Any health hub is my kind of hub. You said so many things that I'd like to comment on, but I'll make it brief. One thing that I agree with is the fat in our society. As with you, when I was in school, we always had one of two fat kids, now unfortunately, you almost can't count them. I never thought of the fact that the technological age isn't making them fat, I thought liver everyone else, TV, XBOX etc did the job. But now my eyes have been opened.

Also the yeast overgrowth is a problem that I'm dealing with. I actually had to diagnose the problem for myself, because the doctors didn't know what was wrong with me. I gained 10 lbs in a short period of time and no one could say why. Then of course I went to the Internet and discovered it. I am on the mend now. You gave some more steps that I am going to implement. This is one of those hubs that I'm going to refer to often, so I must bookmark it. Let me stop now before I rewrite your hub. As a matter of fact I've had a hub in the hopper dealing with my experience with candida, maybe I should finish it now.

Suffice it to say Kelley this is an amazing hub. I am going to read all of yours ASAP.

Very good information, thank you. The problem I see is that our modern society has moved away from a direct connection with land. People (most) just do not grow their own fruits and vegetables anymore. We traded health for convenience, but have we also traded living for lifestyle? It appears so..

      Hi Sheila,

Another thing to look at if it's 10 pounds that you just can't get rid of is the food 'spackle' that everyone has unless they take active steps to clear it.

Interesting that you wrote about candida, as a lot of people are suffering from yeast overgrowth, and have no clue. Candida, if left unchecked, leads to leaky gut syndrome, which is much harder to correct. Leaky gut is when the candida form into spiral configurations, and punch holes in the colon wall. Waste material then leaks out through the holes, and travels throughout the body, even to the brain. I would like to recommend that anyone who has, or thinks they may have either one of these maladies, look into obtaining Super Sea Veg from FarmaSea. These 100% natural veggie caps will eliminate the fungus, and keep the yeast in control. Thanks everyone for sharing!

I try to buy only organic food for my house. I never buy meat that has been pumped full of hormones. There's another reason parents should avoid bringing these types of meat into their household. Have you notice that boys and girls are "growing up" way faster than they did in the 40's and 50's? They are full of growth hormones themselves from their diets. Parents beware. Don't do this to your children. Read labels, buy organic if you have a choice, keep pop (or soda) out of your household. Take care of your family.

      HFCS is a real problem.

I do know that HFCS is usually made from GMO corn and the procedure in which it is made causes it to have toxic amounts of Mercury. Mercury blocks the water channels of the cells. If you can't get water into the cells, how do you flush out the body? You can't.

When i started looking, HFCS is in nearly everything.

You know what i just saw. High Blood Pressure has a correlation with high Cadmium levels. Guess what nearly all inexpensive jewelery, and it's from China, has in it? Cadmium? It seems to me that we have toxin overload.

I heard that Shilajit has been found to be the most potent detoxifier on earth. Has anyone else used this product?

Other countries toxify us, and our Pharmaceutical companies put us on drugs. What a mess.

Great Hub & welcome to industrialization and capitalism. I am American but not proud of those companies who take advantage of us.

I never knew about antibiotics and the estrogen found on fruits & veggies at typical grocery stores.

HFCS yes, I knew this & the hormoned meats.

No wonder Men's breast are growing unusually large. Those hormoned-up supposedly healthy chickens?

I am with you on this. And no wonder the 1st lady is worried. Although, she is in a losing battle against the farmers and medical industry. They both stand to lose billions. Cheap is always better to most Americans so unfortunately the majority will say let it be as I cannot afford Whole foods market stores.
