Worth a Thousand Words

I've written about just about every aspect of my life, my thoughts, my beliefs, my politics, my family. In almost every hub, the picture I have used has been one I have taken myself. My love of photography began as an occupational hazard. You work for a small town newspaper - you are your own photographer.

Back in those days we shot film, which was expensive. You'd go out on your story hoping to get "the money shot" that your editor would like. When I became editor we'd grown to the point I had a part-time photographer. I knew enough to know I needed to tell the him what I had in mind, but encourage him to take the shot he saw. Eventually we went big-time: digital. The world of photojournalism was revolutionized, even for a small weekly newspaper.

The digital world also opened up a world of photography for me. I could take a hundred shots and glean a handful of good ones out of the effort. I could crop a poorly constructed picture down to something I could be proud of (as many of these are!) This technology freed me to document the loves of my life with abandon: my family, my garden and our travels. HubPages limits me to twenty photos per hub, so the major challenge of this hub was to widdle my choices down to twenty. The fact that I am not willing to put my family's likenesses on the World Wide Web helped my discipline greatly.

I guess this hub is my way of saying thank you for the honor so many of you paid me recently in the 100 Best New Hubbers of 2011 voting. This is my way of giving you something back - from my heart.

Kathleen - You are very welcome dear heart. I have read your musings for a while now and thoroughly enjoy the interaction of your Hubs. Life should be a constant collage and will be what we make of it.

      Peace be with you.

Obviously writing is not your only talent...you have some very impressive photos here. I was sad to hear yesterday that Kodak would be filing for bankruptcy. It is a reality of how much has changed in the world of photography in just our liftimes. At the same time, one cannot continue to make buggy whips and hope to stay in business forever unless progress stands still. Thanks for sharing. WB

Wayne: I remember, too, when Kodak was the gold standard. Businesses have to be prepared for their worlds to change overnight, don't they? Thanks for your comments. It helps to have scenes like Santorini as the subject of your photography. How can you miss?

The more hubs I'm reading about photography, the more tempted I am to take it up as a hobby ... as I love being outside. You have some wonderful shots there!

      Thanks for SHARING.

You have absolutely beautiful pictures. I love taking pictures and the instant gratification of being able to upload them right away and put them on Facebook or Hubs or really wherever. Mine aren't as beautiful as yours . . . still learning.

You're an amazing photographer! I don't take as many pictures for my hubs - I have an inferior camera and though I have a flair for being creative, I am not sure I have an eye for the camera. Perhaps is the $50 camera, though. :)

I think I am a photography addict! I have always loved photography, but when digital photography came to be, I was totally hooked. You have so many beautiful pictures here! I love the pictures of all your iris, they are so beautiful! It is always such a plus when you can add your own pictures to your hubs and you do such a good job! Voted up and beautiful! :)

sgbrown: You couldn't have picked a better hub to review today. I need a lift today myself, and you certainly provided it. I have my first iris buds this week here in Atlanta and tomorrow is threatening freezing temperatures. Cross your fingers for me please. And thanks for your lovely comments.
