How To Accept A Bad Gift

Updated on December 15, 2007

Just accept it

Just accept it no matter how much you don't like it. Decline a gift is rude in my culture (Chinese), and I believe that it's true in many cultures. You can sell it on eBay if you don't want it, or give it to sb. whom you think maybe need it.

Once upon a time, Confucius was fallen ill, his friend heard about it and sent him a pack of herbal medicine, Confucius bowed and thanked him, accepted this gift, and left on the shelf without cooking it and tasting it. His disciples asked why he didn't tasted the medicine, he replied: I don't know what's this medicine for, and don't know if it's good for my heath.

Good advise. I'd say not to pass it on to someone else, as it may get around and the giver may figure out you gave away the gift.

That's why people cover up their gift by wrapping paper, or do you some tricks such as letting you close you eyes when they are presenting a gift to you.

But in some situation, it may be inappropriate to accept a gift, your admirer who you hate so much gives a diamond ring, will you accept it or not? That's really bad gift.

I agree, take it and don't let on that you don't like it. Just remember that people don't buy or make things for you to be mean, they really thought they were being nice.
