President George Washington was right....

"Our liberty depends upon our unity."

from Washington's Farewell Address

What does America need in the way of Christmas presents this Christmas?

If we were to combine our thoughts and make a list of such presents, it might look something like this:

/ / Greater Unity,

/ / Repairs for our crumbling Infrastructure,

/ / A balanced Federal Budget,

/ / A first-rate Educational System affordable for all,

/ / A comprehensive Immigration Act,

/ / Equality and Justice for all,

/ / Quality Medical Care we can afford,

/ / Term Limits for Senators and Representatives,

/ / A smaller National Debt,

/ / Interest Rates that actually encourage and reward saving,

/ / A Free Press free of unlabeled bias,

/ / A Social Security System that isn't going broke,

/ / Government that is actually of the people, by the people, and for the people,

/ / More Things we can be thankful for, and cheer for,

/ / Brotherly love that respects our individual differences,

/ / Leadership that is righteous, inspiring, wise, and without guile.

Is it too much to hope that working together we can give ourselves these presents?

It was just as well that you deflected, dear Demas. I take back what I said about Buttigieg for this reason and for his recent stance on drugs...

At any rate, I wish you a wonderful New Year!

Thanks for being in touch again. I notice "our" shared Seventh Day Adventist hub has a new comment, what good timing for this Merry Christmas season. All is well at this end of our line. Thanks again.

I cannot think of a better list than the one you have suggested. You covered every base. The one "wish" that will never happen, sadly, is "A Free Press free of unlabeled bias."

The good news is that we have a strong economy right now....the best in 50 years, and it is likely to continue unless a socialist gets into office and undoes everything the president has accomplished. If that were to happen, the market will tank and your list will go down with it.

Will Congress work together in the near future? The answer is no, sadly.

As for your question as to how well Trump will perform, that will not even be an issue for the president. The only person who might possibly give the president a run for his money, intellectually, is Buttigieg, in my opinion.

Thanks for the comments I have received here and on facebook. I was impressed by tonight's PBS/Politico Debate. I think each candidate on the stage has clearly benefited from the extensive time they have spent talking to potential voters. How that will match up with President Trump's performance and experiences at large rallies primarily held in front of Republican voters leaves me wondering how prepared he will be to deal with the eventual Democrat he will face. It's a long road to November 3rd 2020, and he is likely to have several more key accomplishments on his 2016 promises, but will those be enough to compensate for the face-to-face contacts with a wide range of potential voters the Democrats' candidate will have had?

Demas, that is a mighty fine list you've authored, but I'm afraid this country has passed the point of no return. I'm worried that it has just grown too big to be united under one federal government. Look at the efforts to unite Europe, and now they have Brexit. People try to claim that our diversity is our strength, but so far I see little evidence of that. Human nature will have to accept some big changes for us to find these presents under our respective trees.

I'm not very familiar with conditions in the United States, but I think your ideas sound excellent. I hope they become a reality.

Great list of gifts, Demas. I've been thinking along this same line. Most timely!

If some of this reflects your own thoughts on what we should be wishing for, you might send a copy to your representative and senators. Search for Contact U. S. Senators and Contact U. S. Representatives for the way to do just that. Let's hope that when impeachment is resolved and bitterness subsides a little, we can encourage them to put America above party loyalties and do what needs to be done.
