Finger Foods at New Years Eve Buffet

Happy, Healthy New Year

Here we are on the brink of another new year. I always get a bit sentimental and nostalgic on New Years Eve as we look back at the previous year and look forward in hope, to a new one. I want to wish all my dear HubPages friends, a Happy and Healthy New year and thank you for your love and support here.

As many of us celebrate ringing in the New Year tonight, I thought it would be fitting to put up a video and lyrics of the Auld Lang Syne song. Whether your sitting at home on New Years Eve watching Dick Clark's Rockin Eve celebration, or going out on the town, you will most likely hear the infamous song, "Auld Lang Syne". The song was written by a Scottish poet by the name of Robert Burns in the eighteenth century. It's well known for ringing in the new year as the clock strikes midnight, but this song is used for other occasions as well. The song was not written as a holiday song or intended for new years eve.

Lyrics to 'Auld Lang Syne'

Lyrics to "Auld Lang Syne"

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely you’ll buy your pint cup
and surely I’ll buy mine!
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine ;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand my trusty friend !
And give us a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

History of New Years Eve & 'Auld Lang Syne' Song

In 1929, Guy Lombardo's band played the tune as a segue between radio programs during a live performance at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. By sheer coincidence, they played "Auld Lang Syne" just after the clock struck midnight. This was how the new year's eve tradition was born.

What does "Auld Lang Syne" mean?

This Scottish song title translates into English as:Times Gone By, The Good Old Times and Old Long Since. The meaning of the term is about remembering friends from the past and not letting them be forgotten.

God Bless you all and have a wonderful and safe New Years Eve. I'll be bringing in the new year with my best friend who is my twin sister, as we watch Dick Clark's Rockin Eve special. It's tradition to put out a delicious buffet of our favorite finger foods which we graze on throughout the evening. So far, we've always made midnight.

Dear Stessily-What beautiful memories you've shared with me. Gave me warm fuzzies :-) We sadly have, losing parents at a young age, in common. I lost my mom at age 9 and that's why so many of my memories are about dad. I'm gonna have to look up "the parting glass." I can't believe I've never heard it as I'm part Irish. Must google now. LOL Here is to that cup of kindness-I share it with you all year long.

Hi Jenn-I'm glad you have the words now and can impress your family as you sing loud and proud. LOL

MT, "Auld Lang Syne" is one of my favorite songs, although I also love "The Parting Glass," which is Ireland's equivalent. I have lovely memories of my mum and her sister singing "Auld Lang Syne" with their beautiful voices to welcome so many new years as I grew up.

Your New Year's treats are temptingly delicious! I'm consuming them vicariously. Oyster stew was always savored in my family for special occasions such as New Year's Eve. Vegetables with spinach dip and celery with cream cheese sprinkled with paprika are both tasty treats, wonderful for gliding into the next year.

Just as you associate oyster stew with your dad, I associate it with my mother. I wish that I knew what my dad's favorite food was; sadly, he passed away in my 10th year. I remember that he made the best fudge ever, and we used to welcome the next year with his fudge recipe.

Here's to that cup of kindness throughout life!

I never knew all the words to this song. It always drove me crazy that I didn't know them because I love to sing. What a great post!! I hope that 2012 brings you Health, Happiness, and many Blessings! Cheers, Jenn.

Hi Tina and Happy New Year. Hard to believe were in 2012-My, how time flies. Glad you enjoyed the video as I did. It gets me all choked up seeing all those old memories. The buffet tradition goes back to my dear father who is no longer with us. He made a big deal out of New Years Eve and the finger foods were a fun way to bring in the new year.

It's all good. I sure hope 2012 is a vast improvement over 2011. Of course, we get to give the Obama's the boot this year so they can go vacationing and golfing on their dime and not ours.

Hi MT - nice to hear from you and very happy New Year to you as well!

I do get sentimental as well at New Year, not just for the year that has passed but for the memories of many years that have now gone. As Rabbie Burns says - for auld lang syne - is the best reason to remember and celebrate!

I loved your finger foods - what a great mixture and so many delicious flavours!! Great hub + voted up!

My favorite foods have always been finger foods--I'm a big fan of oysters of any kind. My Dad calls me his little "grazer" because I would rather munch finger foods all day long than eat a full sit-down meal!

Hoping you and your family have a wonderfully happy & healthy 2012 Linda!

Happy New Year and of course Huge Love Filled HubHugs~
