Whether dressing up in cartoon character costumes for a Hollywood Boulevard gig or for a cosplay convention, or for a Halloween party next door - or as a mascot for your college football team - there's a world of cartoon character choice out there. A whole parallel world of characters!

You might have already decided you're a "Tom and Jerry" person, or a "Li'l Abner" guy or gal, or "Goku Saiyan", "Popye" or Minnie Mouse". You might not. You might only know that you want to wear a mask, ooze with sex, be a robot, or a giant rabbit.

  • To help you decide which cartoon character you'd really like to be.
  • A list of are the all-time most popular cartoon characters to chose from, plus ideas from links to Anime costumes, video games characters and Transformers.

Cartoon Costumes for Halloween

The first question has to be, "who do I really want to be"?

Now's your chance to really act out, so grab it. If you haven't been invited to a theme party (or you aren't hosting one) and you are as free-as-a-bird to dress up as any cartoon character you fancy, then here are some important questions to ask yourself before you go out and buy a costume, or rent one - or try to put one together.

Do I want to be anonymous, hidden completely by a mass of pink fur so I can see everyone but they can't see me?

Do I want to be mauled because I'm frightening, or adorable and idolized by children?

Do I want to look seductive - super cool or super appealing?

Do I want to be really funny (ridiculous)?

Do I want to look expensive?

Do I want to show off dancing all night and look great?

Do I want to be iconic, retro, (and fashionable!)?

What do my children want to be?

Once you know who you'd like to be dressed up as, then it's time for the fun.

If you want to be a comic pumpkin or a tree or a Japanese comic character or or a video game character Clip Art has a complete guide to vegetable characters, as well as any other category of cartoon illustration with pictures that will inspire costumes, with vegetable expressions you can easily copy (and make) including, for example, a nice illustration how to be a beetroot.

Anime Costumes

Anime / Manga characters are at Anime and Comic Conventions round the world with fabulous costumes (that look as though they costs hundreds of dollars) and amazing makeup such as Naruto an Akatsuki Mamber, the Vampire Knight, Goku, Piro and Largo (of the Megatokyo Manga series).

Transformers are wicked too. All those clanking metal parts and fierce guns and clanking parts.

Betty Rubble and The Flintsones

Famous Female Cartoon Characters

I have it from the most trustworthy sources who the hottest 'dame' cartoon characters are, ever.

  • Jessica Rabbit (Roger Rabbit) She makes a lot of men jealous of Roger Rabbit
  • Wonder Woman She's sexy and she uses a whip!
  • She Ra (Princess of Power) Retro, great outfit and men love her courage
  • Catwoman Slinky and feline - and she has a whip too!
  • Betty Rubble (The Flintstones) Cute with a bow in her hair a mini and no shoes
  • Betty Boop Oldest most popular sexy cartoon lady - with rights.

Appealing to what men think is erotic, beautiful, intelligent, perky or downright kinky, this short list of female cartoon characters isn't too hard to get rigged up in.

How to Design a Costume Like Jessica Rabbit

You could probably save money by designing your own famme fatale outfits. With some imagination, some resourcefulness and a little time, here are a few tips how to get the image right without spending too much money on extras, from someone who can't sew or make clothes to save her life!

  • Thrift stores are awesome.
  • Find a hairdresser you can have some fun with
  • Ask a friend who's great with make up then let it rip. Over do it. You're a cartoon character don't forget - not a fax simile of someone. (Keep an eye out for something for your partner).
  • Notice the iconic accessory that defines your cartoon character and go to town on that.

As an example, please look at the video of Jessica Rabbit and it can't be too hard to copy her look.

She has long, thin red hair parted high and on the left, on pale skin.

She's wearing a tight fitting shoulder-less, retro, pink evening dress with a slit to the thighs and pin high heels.

She has on a pair of very tight gloves from finger tips to underarm.

She wears makeup like Marlene Dietrich (high, thin curved eye brows, pale blue shaded eye lid cover and red lips)

She smokes with a cigarette holder, like a real broad.

Betty Boop

Betty Boop or Wonder Woman

If you are cute and small and would look great in a short, shoulder less dress and neat little heels and especially if you have curly short hair, (or your hairdresser can do it for you), you could do Betty Boop easily.

You would need to buy some huge stick-on eye lashes, wear a garter belt half way up one thigh and practice standing looking so cute and so small.

Alternatively, you could be slightly overweight, or even very overweight - and do the same thing, as long as you have cute short black hair and long eyelashes. Oh, and paint a very small, cupid mouth.

Wonder Woman

Maybe she's easier bought! You could try to make her crown and arm bands and sword though. Or ask your child or neighbor for that favor.

Snoopy and Woodstock

Animated Cartoon Characters

If being Snoopy, Roger Rabbit, or Tom and Jerry is your bag, then seriously, you're going to have to get into some sort of long furry sack and put some floppy ears on your head (socks?). Then, well, if you're still going to go ahead making your costume yourself all you just need to worry about is covering your shoes with the same material - as galoshes - and put pads on as toenails or pads - or whiskas. A cute round black thing on your nose, a black dog collar and a nice black patch on your back makes you into the perfect Snoopy.

Woodstock is a little harder.

Certainly they make a great pair if you wanted to go as a couple.

You might find it easier to buy the outfits online! They'd be more convincing and you wouldn't boil in all that fur.

The Flintstones

Beauty and the Beast (A Couple!)

Batman & Catwoman

Couple Dress Up

Going to a Halloween Party or any event with your partner, dressed-up as partners (in a comic character 'other' life) is awesome for all ages.

Here is a short list of cartoon character couples:

  • Batman and Cat Woman
  • Cinderella and Prince Charming
  • Marge and Homer Simpson
  • Popeye and Olive Oyl
  • Scooby Doo and Daphne
  • Darth Vader and his wife
  • Peter Pan and Wendy
  • Yogi and Boo Boo
  • Superman and Wonder Woman
  • Mickey and Minnie Mouse
  • Betty Rubble and Flintsone

Homer Simpson

Comic Character Costumes for Men

If I was a man I think I'd chose to clank in metal arm plates and mask and become a Transformer. Or some gory monster video character from Dragon Ball such as Zedaki. Or Darth Vader.

Superman and Batman and Homer Simpson always lead the lists of most popular cartoon guys, but Scooby Doo is my tip for a Halloween party, or, if I was getting ready for some cosplaying even, I'd be a Vampire.

Secretly, If I was a fella though, I'm Mighty Mouse, every time - or maybe Popeye? Or Woodstock?
