Christmas Cards And Colors Bright Somehow Just Won't Do

Updated on December 24, 2012

My father wrote these lyrics for a song. Although he was a music composer and lyricist and published many songs, this one never got published. He died in 1986.

In tribute to him and to convey my holiday wishes to all during this season, here it is:

* * * * *

Christmas cards and colors bright

Somehow just won’t do,

So let music fill this night

With my wish for you:

A bright and cheery Christmas to you,

May all your magic wishes come true;

With mistletoe and holly

And little faces jolly,

With peace on earth and gladness everywhere.

When Herald Angels out of the blue

Sing Halleluiah so joyful and true,

I’ll be there at the start of

And gladly be a part of

That bright and cheery Christmas

With you.

    Thanks, Moon, for stopping by. I wanted to publish a song that my father did not get published as a tribute to him because he was a darn good composer. He even had Doc Serenson in his band long before he became a fixture on the Johnny Carson show, and he played for Henny Youngman, the comedian on occasion. When my mother became ill my father was fighting alone for survival with six children while pursuing a career in commercial jingles, song writing and teaching. When most today might throw in the towel on such a burden, my father never quit. He loved his children but was beset with crushing and almost catastrophic circumstance. I remember when my mother was in the hospital one Xmas at about age 7 and my father had shopped and wrapped presents for all his children alone. Death of a parent frequently brings with it the ability for children to finally see their parents as people and if we're with just a bit of wisdom we might also see that all their faults and strengths, if they were given to us, would have made us do the same kinds of things. Yes, I guess I could say I was close to him, but only because I could discern why he was who he was and his not giving up. Can't go into it here but he suffered immensely. Vic Damone sang one of his songs, "Draw Me A Sketch of the Autumn".

    You and your Father must have been close for you to want to post his Christmas lyrics. They are simple and beautiful, and you are so fortunate to have been so close to him. And him to you.

    Thank you peachpurple. I wish I had an audio of the music he wrote with these words but, sadly, I do not. You have a wonderful holiday. Happy New Year!
