Sturgeon Bay is a city in Door County, Wisconsin, which, in my observation, must be among the most popular places to go in the state. It’s population is about 9,400.The county is basically a peninsula with Green Bay on one side and Lake Michigan on the other.

Sturgeon Bay’s Christmas celebration is called “Christmas by the Bay. With a parade, holiday home tour and other things from November 19 through November 21. There is much to see in this city even without the events, so plan on spending some time.

Happily lodging rates are seasonally low.  The Stone Harbor Resort ordinarily has a Thanksgiving dinner spread. Or, you may want to take a drive up the peninsula to explore the other towns.

Hay wagon and Trolley rides.

All day Saturday in downtown Sturgeon Bay. The children will find the hay rides fun but if you have trouble with cold temperatures, better try the trolley.

Sturgeon Bay Holiday Parade

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers have a great marching band. Many civic organizations and individual families march each year. Santa will be there as well. It starts on Madison Ave, crosses Memorial Bridge and follows Third Ave., turns North on Jefferson Street. It ends at Sixth Avenue where Santa will be waiting for everyone to catch up. A lot of candy is thrown out for the kids to scramble after.

After the parade Santa will be at the Door County Historical Museum on Fourth Avenue. Kids can see him until mid-afternoon on Saturday. Or, you might find him at the breakfast buffet at the Stone Harbor Resort Sunday morning.

Entertainers will perform at the clock tower after the parade.

Jefferson Street shops will have a holiday Stroll and Art Studio Crawl on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Door County YMCA Folk Art Fair

The fair will be Sunday, November 21, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

This will be at the Sturgeon Bay YMCA

Proceeds will got o the YMCA Youth in government

Holiday Ornament Showcase and Family Activity Day

Door County Maritime Museum on Sunday November 21

Coloring Contest

A coloring contest for the kids is held Saturday afternoon at the Bridgeport Resort.

Other things to do while in Sturgeon Bay

The Third Avenue Playhouse in downtown on third ave. is an old theater once known as the Donna. It was once a movie house. It is quaint and has unusual talent for a small town drama group. For movies there is the Sturgeon Bay Cinema six-plex theater on Egg Harbor road.

Like many others I am drawn to visit Door County, as it is a beautiful area. I am not sure why they celebrate Christmas in November but I guess this way you can do to twice.

I should get to Michigan more. Door county is a popular spot in Wisconsin but anything up north in the summer is nice.

Hi Don. I almost visited Door County a few years ago but opted for the Apostle Islands instead. My home is right across the lake in Traverse City, Michigan. Interesting article.

It is a reflection of commercialization.I have sort of lost enthusiasm for holidays by the time we actually get to them. As a practical matter business people do have to plan in advance. Thanks for commenting.

Soon they will be revving up for the holiday time of year in Sturgeon Bay. Seems we quickly jump from Fall into Halloween, Thanksgiving and then the Christmas holidays.

During her high school days, my mother and her family lived in Whitefish Bay which is not that far from Sturgeon Bay in Wisconsin. Such a pretty part of the State!

Thanks for reading and commenting. Yes it does get cold and it can be hot in Summer. The ideal time is usually Autumn when the trees turn color.

I've never been to Wisconsin but I bet it's gorgeous. I think I'd like to visit in a warmer season though. That wind off the lake is probably pretty wicked :)

Thanks for your comment. Door county is pretty much a recreation area. The City of Green Bay is right near by so people go there for sports and may spend some time on the Peninsula as I call it.

It attracts a lot of people largely because of the lake. There are those who like to fish in the Great lakes and there are boats there that take them out to do it.Thanks for commenting.

Sturgeon Bay resembles my home town in many ways including population and looks like a fine community worth visiting. Thank you for this Hub.

Autumn is best around October usually when trees are turning color and temps are mild. Since the advent of snowmobiles winter has become popular with some folks. There are festivals for thins like apples the, pumpkins.and whatever. Thanks for commenting.
