Christmas on a Budget - How Not to Panic Over Gifts

Updated on December 1, 2018

How to live on a budget. From Birthdays to Christmas, you don't have to break the bank!

Panicking gift buying
Panicking gift buying

I'm Broke! How Can I Buy Gifts For Christmas?

Its that time of year again when you start to feel your purse strings starting to pull. You don't earn enough money, or you are claiming welfare/social. You have been made redundant or you are a pensioner.

Either way the money never goes very far. So buying Birthday or Christmas Presents is a nightmare. The second the word Gifts is mentioned you start to panic.

So what to do?

How on earth are you going to cope with food, gifts, rent and so on at this the coldest time of the year?

Well there is a way, so don't panic.

You just have to juggle a few things.

Be Careful Don't Buy Cheap Perfume

perfume

Cheap Doesn't have to be Trash

For a start there are various shops that do cheap but not tacky goods. You just have to look for them.

Over here in England we have a shop called the Pound Shop. Simple title, and it says it all. Of course you want to make sure that whatever you buy is not liable to break, smell bad, or bring someone out in a rash!

So if you are buying perfume I would suggest buying it from a more specialized shop that is maybe doing a sale.

The reason I say this is that a while ago, there was a case in the national newspaper telling of a young lad who was badly burned on holiday because his mother had bought the sun cream from one of the Pound stores. Evidently to put it mildly, it was rubbish!

So you do have to be careful.

Kids First Tablet
Kids First Tablet

Children's First Tablet

Games, Videos and Audio books! Once again too young for my son who is now an adult, but very similar to my cousins little boys first computer.
And yes I had a play with it too!
The great thing about these children's Tablets is that they teach your child in a safe environment, and this Kids Edition Tablet is also a great way for your child to understand how technology works. And most impressive? Its pretty cheap too! It comes with;

  1. 2 year Guarantee
  2. 8" Display
  3. And introducing Spanish Language Content.

And tons more!

Make It and Gift it!

For those of us who do have a talent for Craft making then making your own gifts can be an easier option. I have friends that can whip up a lovely jumper, or gingerbread house in a couple of days!

But alas that is not me. I have two fumbling hands that are more likely to ruin it in five minutes than make something special.

But you can of course buy hand made goods that are different, for those who have everything they need. Its a novelty and well worth looking out for craft fairs. Not only are you being simple, but you are putting money into small businesses too!

Or Buy Crafty Unicorns!

Unicorns
Unicorns

Paint your own Unicorn!

Ah Memories! I had something very similar when I was a child! And it was wonderful.

For some reason Unicorns are this years most popular toy! All children go through phases where toys are concerned but Unicorns are going to be the number one buy this Christmas.

Imagine waking up on the day to find this. It may be cheap but kids will love it!
The Paint colors include, yellow, pink, green, white and blue.
And the Kit includes a 7 in resin unicorn, i paintbrush, and 5 paint pots!
From 6 years and up. And for adults, (like me!) who love it too!

Mabella Blue Sapphire Jewelry

I was planning on buying this for my sister in law. Trouble was, when I got it home I decided to keep it for myself. Yes I know, now I have to go out and get something else!

Trouble was, its so gorgeous! And my favorite color too.

  • Sterling Silver heart gemstone earrings and pendant set. With cubic zirconia.
  • Great for your wife, friend or just about anyone else in your family. It comes with an 18" Chain (chain is varied) and free elegant jewelry box
  • The great thing is that it has a 60 days money back and 100% satisfaction guarantee!
  • Durable and good finished anti allergic, Nickel free.

Guess Who I bought This For?

MABELLA 5.10 CTW Simulated Blue Sapphire Pendant Necklace Stud Earrings Sterling Silver Jewelry Set for Women
MABELLA 5.10 CTW Simulated Blue Sapphire Pendant Necklace Stud Earrings Sterling Silver Jewelry Set for Women

Yes okay. I bought it for me! Why? Because its gorgeous! To be fair I am keeping the earrings for my cousin. Can you blame me? Gorgeous color, and I do love my necklaces!

See? You can buy Cheap!

Like many people these days, I tend to buy most of my stuff online. Obviously Amazon comes to mind, but there are smaller retail outlets that can produce some cheap yet good gifts.

I have a relatively small family, but I know many of you have relatives of relatives so to speak!

Just remember don't do what I always tend to fall into. I rush out and buy rather expensive gifts only to be given back a box of chocolates, socks or smellies!

Yep I know, so not fair.

So be careful who you buy for, and think about the who's and why's before buying.

Party Girl

So what gave me the idea for this article? Well, while I was sitting round a friends the other day, her little girl, 5 years old, came trotting in wearing her mothers shoes, a party dress and yes smothered in mom's lipstick, which was quite funny.

After the initial 'Oh no!' we both started chatting about gifts for Christmas. And my friend told me that she was buying her daughter party dresses. As well as other gifts of course. So, long story short, hence this article.

But it got me thinking, what else do we not really look at as Christmas gifts? So I racked my memory and came up with some of things I had bought for my son and other family members.

Girls Party Flower Girl Dress

2Bunnies Girl Backless Peony Lace Back A-Line Straight Tutu Tulle Party Flower Girl Dresses (Gray Maxi, 4T)

As you can imagine, my friends little girl will be so pleased when she sees this dress! This was the first of many we sat and looked at, but decided this one would suit her best.

Elecstars Touch Bedside Lamp
Elecstars Touch Bedside Lamp

Electronic And Tech

Obviously the most popular gifts today are going to be electronic. Whether its Tablets, Computers or Apple Siri. Most of us have some sort of technology. But it doesn't have to be the same old boring thing.

I personally have a sun lamp that gets brighter and brighter as the alarm goes off! But I fancy buying the one below for me, but sadly others come first!

Christmas gifts should be thought about 'outside the box' if you will excuse the pun!

Not everybody wants the same old thing for Christmas. I am happy with a book. But sometimes that's not enough, lol!

On a serious note, my brother has aspergers syndrome. Which is in the autistic spectrum. He loves his gadgets and colors. So this lamp is right up his street!

Great for my brother's Asperger syndrome!

Elecstars Touch Bedside Lamp - with Bluetooth Speaker, Dimmable Color Night Light, Outdoor Table Lamp with Smart Touch Control, Best Gift for Men Women Teens Kids Children Sleeping Aid
Elecstars Touch Bedside Lamp - with Bluetooth Speaker, Dimmable Color Night Light, Outdoor Table Lamp with Smart Touch Control, Best Gift for Men Women Teens Kids Children Sleeping Aid

We bought this for my brother who loves his electronics. He suffers from depression and asperger's, so anything that is colorful and has added attractions is a must for him.

Happy Holidays!

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday time, and don't forget! Gifts can be useful, wonderful and above all else? Cheap!

I wish I'd seen this BEFORE Xmas was over. Interesting that HubPages allowed all those Amazon links because you'd actually bought the product. That's a good strategy to take.

Now that Christmas gift-giving is in the past, hopefully, no one blew their budget. Thoughtful gifts do not have to be expensive. Big families can draw straws and only have to give one gift to a family member. The other family members do the same. Dollar amounts can be set in advance. There are many ways to share the spirit of the holidays without stressing over money. The true meaning of Christmas should be kept in mind.

I am awful at buying gifts so I usually end up doing some kind of event like taking them to dinner or a show. Or I really like to buy someone a service like a year of Netflix or something that keeps on giving. I like what you have here and appreciate the help. The necklace was nice and I think my wife will like it.

There are good and bad quality items from all price ranges. I'd personally waste a little money on something that turns out terrible, than a lot of money on the same thing.

I've dialed back what I'm giving materially this year and replaced it with experiences together such as tickets to a concert where memories can be made. I've also replaced some of the material gifts with increases in an increase in charitable donations to the non-profit low-cost spay/neuter clinic I support. I really like that colorful bedside lamp you recommend. I have a niece with a birthday in December who would probably like that.

      Hi Nell...

I wish I had this cool hub two weeks ago when I did the bulk of my shopping. Every year, I say to myself, "spend a little less." But then I see something I have to buy for someone or for my grandchildren. This year, I've learned a bit of a lesson -- it's truly the thought behind the present that says the most about gifting during this very special time of year. Wishing happy and merry holidays to you and your family, dear Nell.

Nell, we get so much food brought to us by our subcontractors during the holiday, that chocolate isn't a good option. Perhaps candles, but they'd have to be organic. We're all pretty much into natural products and one co-worker is a vegan. I'll just have to put on my thinking cap to see if I can top last year's gifts.

I buy next years gifts right after Christmas and right now I am doing surveys for Survey Junkie and getting on up there. You can get money in Pay Pal or I just get gift cards which I will use as gifts or use after Christmas, when I am broke. lol Check into it. Great way to pass the time. It is international far as I know.

Oh, and just wait to visit my hubs, I will have a new one or two coming out in a few days.

Great article, Nell! Yes, Poundland is great for all sorts, isn't it? Especially stocking fillers, I find. Good ideas here.

For the first time ever, I've already bought all the Christmas presents and stocking fillers, and I've even bought the birthday presents - there are four from beginning of December to first week in January! So it's an expensive time of year for me. I love the shopping and the wrapping and then, of course, we see the smiles when presents are opened - the icing on the cake.

I hope you have a great Christmas time too, Nell.

These are all great gift ideas, Nell. I don't have little kids to buy for, but I do want to get something for each of my 5 female co-workers. Last year I bought them all organic hand-made soaps and a bamboo soap dish. However, this year I'm in a quandary as to what to get them. I don't want to spend a lot of money but I also want to gift them with something they'll actually use or wear. Any ideas?

      Hi, Nell,

Great Christmas gifts. I like the nice sterling piece there. My wife might enjoy that.

Here we have: Dollar Generals, Family Dollars, and the everywhere Walmart for finding gifts on the cheap. But I like making my relatives gifts as well.

Great article full of wonderful ideas and well written to help us who realize that life must continue after Christmas.

Besides, Nell, my 29 nieces and nephews only want money now that they have grown a bit. My daughter just wants time with us. (I love her so much for that.) Saves on wrapping paper and boxes, indeed. But we will find her something; she is worth it.

Have a Merry Christmas if I don't see a post from you before that time.

      Much respect and admiration,

      Tim

One reads articles on gift giving from time to time, but this one is especially useful, practical and fun. You made me smile when you decided to keep the necklace. I had something similar happen once....I was helping my son shop for one of his childhood friends. We picked out a beautiful, sparkling piece of costume jewelry. When we looked over all the purchases he made later, I kinda mentioned that I thought the necklace would look better on me. Lol. Well, my son still gave his friend the necklace, but to my great delight, he went out a purchased another one (or a very similar one) for me. YAY!! It was one of several presents he gave me which I adore to this day.

Anyhoo, I love all of these ideas. You've got something for just about everyyone! A wonderful and inspiring article, Dear Nell!
