Father's Day Tribute to My Father and a Special Father's Day Tribute to my Dad

Updated on June 14, 2016

Happy Father's Day

This is a tribute to my father and a tribute to my dad. Happy Father's Day to my father (Silas), and a special Happy Father's Day to my Dad (Jim). You both contributed to my being who I am.

Happy Father's Day to my Father

Father!

You went off to serve in World War II

The Day that I arrived

Mom cried and prayed

That you would come back alive

You left so fast

We had no time to bond

You would not see me learn to walk or talk

Or see me learn to run

Me about two and a half years old
Me about two and a half years old | Source

Mom told me all about you

But she didn't know the half

She told me you would love me

That you would really make me laugh.

Mom never told me

That I would learn to love you too

She never told me that you would not stay

And I would really miss you

Next time you went away

My father is the baby -As my Uncle Herlie watches over him.
My father is the baby -As my Uncle Herlie watches over him. | Source

Mom must have had a premonition

There was someone new

Both you and Mom had grown

How much you would grow apart

Is something neither one had known

Don't think I am blaming Mom

Don't think I am blaming you

I knew that you both had to

Do what you must do

And Mom had grown up

Taking care of me

And fending for herself

She had grown up all alone

When you came home

And angry words were spoken

The fighting would begin

You gave her two more children then you left again

I heard that you got remarried

And I hoped that she loved you

I was happy that you found sombody new

But we lost touch with you

For the next few years we wondered

If you thought about us too

Your daughter

And two sons you barely knew

Our Dad, James Winkler in WWII, I am sure that I speak for my brothers also when I say. "Dad we love you and we miss you on this Father's Day.

One day Mom found someone new

From the first day that we met him

That is when we knew

That we would love him too.

Dad is the one who raised us

And cheered us up when we were sad

Though he could not replace you

He became our dad

To Dad

Dad brushed away the tears

When something made us cry

And he always taught us right from wrong

He taught us to never tell a lie

He taught us to be kind

And to always show respect

He taught us how to care

And stand up for each other when he could not be there

Until the day Dad walked me down the aisle I had never seen him cry, except when our puppy died.
Until the day Dad walked me down the aisle I had never seen him cry, except when our puppy died. | Source

Dad cried as he walked me down the aisle

And handed me to a man he barely knew

He prayed that man would love me

And to me he would be true

Dad worried about my brothers

When they went off to war

And prayed that God would keep them safe

That is what Dads are for

When my brother Darrell was drafted.
When my brother Darrell was drafted. | Source

My brother Darrell

Drafted to go to Vietnam

And he was proud

To go and serve our country

Darrell received his papers

Before he turned 18 and

Mom Signed for him to marry

His sweetheart before he would go to war

My brother Tony would be sent to Vietnam's Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, is the area around the former border between North and South Vietnam.
My brother Tony would be sent to Vietnam's Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, is the area around the former border between North and South Vietnam. | Source

When my brother Tony heard

His brother was caught in the draft

He could not stand to be alone

Without his best friend in the house

I know that Dad was worried

Though he laughed when he heard that Tony said

He will enlist to protect his brother

He is the only brother that he has

While my brothers were serving in Vietnam

My two sons were born

I know that Dad was proud

They are his grandsons

I believed my father had a right to know

That he was a grandfather

And that his two sons had gone to war

I set-out to find him so I could tell him more

Someone said he lives in Texas

But they don't know where

I search through the white pages

In many places there

I never knew how many people

Had my father's name

When I began to call

And eventually I found him

Living in Fort Worth

I call the number and when the answer came

I said, "Are you my father?"

I could hear he got choked-up when he

Called my name

Within weeks my father came to visit

With a stepmother, three sisters and another brother

But that is not how the story ends

Mom and Dad moved to Texas

And My father and my dad became good friends

Rest in Peace, Silas D. my father

And James Winkler, my Dad

Happy Father's Day to you both

We are blessed you are the Parents that we had.

      Dear Shyron,

"A sincere you're welcome, for the heart-felt words that I sent you. Always stay in the game. Write hub after hub (like this one) and you will always be happy and although this comment borders on corny, being happy IS possible."

      Love You, Shyron.

Kenneth, thank you for the warm comments. I miss my dad, he always told me the truth about anything asked, he was a genuinely good person. My father was a good person too. But I grew up raised by my dad. We thought alike and I knew where he stood on most everything.

      I do appreciate you Kenneth.

      Blessings and hugs

      Dear Shyron,

I am not instilling overkill in my many comments, it's just that I find THIS hub as timely and poignant as it was the first time it was published.

Mothers everywhere are always going to be special. No argument.

But I shudder to even think what our lives would be like without the warm, and always-present wisdom and leadership that our fathers gave us.

No. My dad and I seldom thought just alike, but we did find many common grounds in order to stay peaceful. And this was a huge task. LOL.

I miss my dad as I always will. I can just picture him now walking around that gorgeous land of Heaven and him dressed in his favorite pleated pants, brown wing tip slippers, a snappy suitcoat and his curly black hair combed just right.

Yep. He is happy as can be.

Shyron, my Dear Friend, write me often.

      Love you.

Hope all is well with you and John and Chipper. The hot days are upon us and tomorrow and thereafter for the foreseeable future are to be 95º and more, so try to stay cool. Blessings to you all dear friend. Take care . . .

Thank you Demas for reading this again, yes my brothers are well, I talked to only one Sunday (Father's day) he is well and enjoying his (3) grand daughters but I saw on Facebook that the other one is enjoying his grandchildren also, but I did not get the chance to talk to him.

I do hope you enjoyed your father's day.

Au fait, thank you for the compliment, comment and for sharing. I did read your article about Enge and I did listen to him singing "Please Release Me" he did an amazing job, especially when I am very critical about singers singing someone else's song, but Enge did it as well as the original artist.

It was good talking to you last night. John and I are both tired of working outside, especially in this heat. Hope you are cool and not suffering the heat outside.

      Blessings and hugs dear friend.

I am back reading this again the day after Fathers Day 2016. This was a good narrative poem and said a lot about your family and what can happen in life as we stumble along at times. I'm glad your brothers survived and I hope they were well and happy yesterday.

Back to share this excellent tribute to your father because Father's Day will soon be here again. Just 6 days away.

Glad we got to talk for a little while. Still forgot to mention that I had updated my article on Enge. There are 3 music videos on that hub and I replaced the first one. Be sure to watch it when you get a chance. In that video Enge is top drawer. Be sure to have tissues handy for dealing with drool.

Hope all is well with you and John and that the doc's appt. went well. Just had the last of the rain for the foreseeable future. Blessings and hugs dear friend. Take care . . .

      My Dearest Shyron,

It is my distinct pleasure to be your friend. It is you, who is so Dear and Enduring with me. God bless you richly.

Talk about a small world. I know where Mt. Hope is located and I am amazed to know that two people on such an expansive website can have hometowns so near the other. God is good.

You may write me at anytime you please. You can also confide in me about anything also and it will not go any further.

Dear Kenneth, thank you for being My Dear Friend.

May God be with you also.

It is so good to know you live close to where I was born, if you took 43 north to 24 east to 101 north and if you hit 72 Hwy, that means you blinked when you went through Hatton, my home town. And if you go south on Hwy 41, we lived in Mt. Hope, that is where the story came from "When a Gun for Protection came from".

      Blessings and Hugs Dear Friend.

      Shyron,

No. Thank you for starting this prayer comment. I am fearful that America is slowly forgetting the older veterans and the contributions they made to help us to keep our country free.

I am into building birdhouses and selling them. With the monies from the sales, I can buy some groceries--a week-long hospital stay (that I had to have) in November for congestive heart failure has really hit me hard. The hospital bills and other necessity bills and add to this the collection agencies' calls, well, you can fill out the picture.

If you would like to buy a birdhouse from me, I will ship it FREE to you. Or if you know of anyone who wants a birdhouse built with treated lumber for use on the outside or inside painted with your spec's--college affiliation, mascot, colors, etc., or anything you choose.

Have them contact me through ILovePam55@yahoo.com and I will take their orders.

I am serious. I have not got as much time to write hubs as I used to. But who among us can know what lies over the next hill?

Anyway. Thanks for the sweet comment and (((HUGS))) and XOXOXO to you, Shyron, my dear friend.

      Love,

      Kenneth

Voted up and sharing again with followers.

It is so hot out there. It sped up to 91 degrees F. by 10:15 AM and then it just sat there for hours and is now slowly getting up to 95 F. Does that make sense? Why wouldn't it have kept climbing at 10? Too hot anyway. Thought you said you liked it hot the other day. Well, if it's making you sick that's not a good thing. You need to stay in during the worst of it and do any outdoor work before 9 -- it was almost 90 by 9 this morning. Blessings . . .

      Hi, My Dear Shyron,

You are correct. We are friends for life. You are one of the many blessings who came from HP. I just wish that one day I would have cash enough to buy a ticket to come to meet you.

I do not travel that much. I cannot ride long distances for my legs and back stiffen-up and ache more than they do now.

This is not a pity party, but the truth.

But I can write to you via HP. And YOU are a blessing to me.

This touching narrative poem spoke clearly of love and war, of parenting and brothers and was truly lovely. Those pictures of your brothers brought back so many memories of days gone by.

It's interesting that you found your biological Dad in Fort Worth. And wonderful that at long last, you could develop a closer relationship with him. My Mother and her family lived and worked there for many years.

I live in a suburb of Dallas, Texas where last year we had three straight months of over a hundred degrees everyday.

One good thing as I tell anyone who complains about the heat, after living in Chicago many years with the cold and snow.

That's fine. I know that you have a life. Is it Lawrence County, Alabaama? If so, then I am only 2 hours south of you because this is close to Athens, Alabama, where the Mid-South Fiddlers Convention, the biggest Bluegrass music and arts and crafts festival in the USA is held each first weekend in October.

I would LOVE for you to follow me. I really would.

That would make me so happy.

      Have a cool day--its already 93 degress at 12:02 p.m. cdst

      Kenneth

Kevin, thank you for the comment, thumbs up and sharing. Yes, I had the best and the addition of sisters and another brother. They live here in Texas and we do keep in touch. My stepmother was a wonderful person also.

I hope that if you are a father that you are also a dad, and I hope you had a good Father’s Day.

Beautiful. Heartrendingly so. I lost my Dad just last Fall and wrote a tribute to him as well. I am sure yours is reading this in Heaven with a smile on his face and a tear in his eye.

      Hello Shyron,

This is an excellent piece of writing. Amazing in every aspect of writing.

I loved every word--and the lay-out was superb.

Voted up and all the choices because you deserve it.

You have such a gift for writing. Just keep writing and good things are bound to happen to you.

I cordially invite you to read one or two of my hubs, and be one of my followers.

      That would make my day.

I am so honored to meet you.

It must have been great to have two when you found out how the original felt. Those words were both charming and affectionate Shyron. It was a loving poem. I gave it thumbs up and shared it.
