Giving flowers as Mother's Day gifts

Flowers can definitely be wonderful gifts to your mother for Mother’s Day because of how beautiful and colorful they are.

Red roses aren't the only kinds of flowers in this world. There are so many other flowers out there, so there's no need to limit yourself to red roses unless it's your mom's favorite flower.

If you really want to give your mother roses, you can choose ones that aren't red in color. If you really want to give her something red though, you can choose from many other flowers that also come in that hue

Red roses: to give or not to give?

If you're thinking of acquiring roses, especially red roses, as gifts, then think again.

Roses are more commonly given on Valentine’s Day and they're also something that is usually given to a wife or a girlfriend.

Roses have other meanings but it has a connotation of being associated with passion, love and romance. Moreover, roses seem to be overrated already.

They're one of the most common and well-known flowers out there. This is what people give to each other all the time.

Be different and choose other flowers for your Mother. After all, there are so many out there. Red roses aren't the only kinds of flowers in the world.

The problem with white flowers

You also need to consider the color of the flowers that you’re planning to give to your Mother for Mother’s Day. Unless your mom’s favorite color is white, avoid giving her white flowers. White seems too plain and ordinary. Flowers come in many different shades and colors to make your present appear more exotic and vibrant.

So there's no need to settle for white flowers that would just make your present look drab and boring. Besides, some white flowers have the connotation of being associated with funerals, which isn't the message you want to give to your mother.

What kind of flowers should you give to your Mother for Mother's Day?

While you can just pick some random flowers that aren't red roses or colored white and then give them to your mother as gifts, it certainly doesn't hurt to be more refined in what kind of flowers you should be purchasing. It's not hard to put a little bit more thought in your choice of flower gifts for your mom.

At first I was thinking - who cares what kinds of flowers, as long as they give me flowers, any flowers. But you are right. There are considerations, one of which is personal preference. But how is, say, a 15 year old boy to know that mom hates gladiolus? That they remind mom of cheap flowers at a funeral. Or that carnations may be passe but this mom loves them. Love the hub. Voted up and shared!

@Dolores Monet - hello and thanks for your comment and feedback. Yeah, I think it's more special if you put more thought into the kinds of flowers you're going to gives as presents. After all, if you're already buying flowers anyway, then you might as well get the ones that the recipient will like or that has a good meaning. I guess children should ask their moms about flowers long before Mother's Day or maybe find a way to talk about flowers and get some info on what kinds their moms like. Or they can just go with flowers that have good meanings.

I think that most people would be happy to receive flowers no matter what kind they are (unless they are allergic, of course) because it is the thought that counts. Learning about the special meanings of flowers is something that most people would not realize. Thanks for the education!

I wish that my mother was still alive and that I could gift her with flowers and other things as well. For those who still have living mothers, just show your appreciation in any manner you can. Time spent with them is probably the most precious gift of all. Up and interesting votes.

@Peggy W - thanks for the comment and the votes. Yes, it is the thought that counts when it comes to gifts but giving flowers based on their meanings can also add to your gift and make it more special. I'm sorry about your Mother. And I agree that time spent with our Mothers is really one of the most precious gifts of all. We shouldn't forget to tell them we love them and appreciate them even if it isn't Mother's Day.

When I give my mom flowers, it's usually a mixed bouquet, but I love how you gave specific meanings for different flowers. Next time, I might just opt for a single flower bouquet!
