It's the thought that counts with holiday gifts, but what are you to do with the gifts that you can't use? I'm sure it's happened to you before, where you receive a gift that you absolutely have no use for. Whether its clothes that you do not fit (and can't return), jewelry that you wouldn't dare to wear out the door or other items that end up hidden in the closet for years, it happens to many of us year after year.

Let's all make an effort to stop giving holiday gifts that people can't use. While wish lists have helped reduce the chance of giving away gifts that people can't use, a wish list is not always available. In such instances, its best to resort to gift items that practically anyone can use. What are these items and how affordable are they?

Here is a list of the top 3 types of gifts that almost anyone can use and that are affordable ($10 and up):

  1. Coffee and Tea: If your recipient is not a coffee lover, she's probably a tea lover, and even if not, these are items she can make use of. Whether she only drinks it occasionally or serves it to her guests who make a visit, it'll go to good use. Many department stores and drug stores sell prepacked gift items of coffee and tea. You can find Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts and many other branded prepacked gift items.

  2. Sweets: There are a variety of prepacked gift items that feature sweets, from chocolate, caramel popcorn, candy, to cookies. Some of my favorites include Harry & David's Moose Munch, Ghirardelli, and Jelly Bellys. These make great gifts the recipient can enjoy during a late night movie at home or with her family and friends during the holidays.

  3. Cookie Jar: Cookie jars can come in a variety of sizes and styles. If you select one that is classic with no huge bells or whistles, the recipient will most definitely be able to find some use for it, whether for display during certain times of years or for use to hold goodies in the cabinet.

What are some great holiday gift ideas you have that everyone can make use of? Please send a comment.

Thanks for your comments aslaught and Brooke Lorren.

Brooke Lorren - I agree gift cards to appropriate online stores make useful holiday gifts, but there is something impersonal about it. Just my personal take on it, but I'm sure others love receiving gift cards - this way they can get exactly what they want.

Gift cards. Most people that I know could use a gift card to Amazon.com, Walmart, or iTunes.

Photos are also something that a lot of people could use, even if they have just about everything. Of course, this really works best with family members or close friends.
