Updated on January 25, 2013

What Kinds of Massages are There?

There are multiple different kinds of massages that you can get.Below is a short list of the main massages that most spa's and massage parlors offer. They are the basic massages, and most massages are based off of or built onto these. A couple’s massage is a massage that you get with your special someone, usually performed in the same room at the same time, by two different massage therapists. You usually choose the massage you want and your significant other chooses the massage they want as well. A lot of spas and massage parlors offer special deals and discounts for buying more than one, so this is a good way to actually save money, and get to spend a little time together relaxing and getting pampered. And, with Valentine's Day just around the corner, couples massages are gifts that not only you give, but get as well.

Massage Types/Methods

There are a couple main professionals that provide massage services such as athletic trainers, physical therapists, and many practitioners of traditional Chinese and eastern medicine. There are countless more types of massages available, with a million different variations possible, with even more stroke possibility. This is just a short list of the more common types you might find at any day spa or massage parlor.

Swedish massages use long flowing strokes of light to medium pressure and they combine soothing music and candlelight to help create a relaxing ambiance.

Deep Tissue massages are basically the same as a Swedish massage, but use deeper pressure to really relax and relieve deep tension.

Hot Stone Massages offer the soothing warmth of hot stones and flowing hand movements using pressure to ease all your pains, stress, and worry away.

Medical massages target key pain centers, usually joints and muscle groups, and are usually provided by sports medical physician, and are a great way to help heal after an injury.

Jin Shin Jyutsu is a Chinese method of placing the fingertips over clothing on designated energy locks, and is used to harmonize and restore the bodys natural energy flow. This promotes good health and well being.

Facials are massages and other comforting services preformed on the face and head of a person. Typically a person will get a massage, cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. Some types of facials, such as Anti Aging facials also include exfoliation of the skin as well as buffing, steaming, and collagen applications.
