How to Greet your Mom a "Happy Birthday"

Updated on September 5, 2014

My mother is a poem

I'll never be able to write,

though everything I write

is a poem to my mother.

~Sharon Doubiago

A man loves his sweetheart the most, his wife the best, but his mother the longest.

 ~Irish Proverb

FELIZ CUMPLE MAMI (Happy Birthday Mami)

Leo Messi has been sanctioned for lifting his sports gear that reveals a vest, greeting his mom a happy birthday after scoring a goal for Barcelona, 3-0 against Racing Santander. This is in accordance with the article 91.1 for goal celebrations. Let me quote a part of it.

"Any soccer player who, celebrating a goal, or by another cause related to the match lifts his shirt to display any publicity, quote, legend, acronym, drawing or art, will be sanctioned, and fined with a sum between 2.000 and 3.000 Euros (between USD $2,736 and USD $4,105)."

A very huge amount... just for wishing a happy birthday for the woman who brought him to this world and one of the reasons why he is considered as the world's best contemporary player at the age of 23. Just by lifting his sports gear specifically his shirt, he was penalized. Whew!

Against the Law?

This news had been disturbing me for days now, for I believe that what Messi did was just right and a sign of love and respect to his mother. Though, the sports committee was obviously not that happy on the sweetness and thoughtfulness of Messi.

You see, my mom is also going to celebrate her birthday this February, this Valentine’s Day. Yes, she was born on the day of the hearts and no wonder she is such a lovable person and a very good mom.

Like, Messi, I want to wish my mom a happy birthday nonetheless not including the fine or the sanction that he got, eh. So, here lies the idea of my third hub.

“Well, birthdays are merely symbolic of how another year has gone by and how little we've grown. No matter how desperate we are that someday a better self will emerge, with each flicker of the candles on the cake, we know it's not to be, that for the rest of our sad, wretched pathetic lives, this is who we areto the bitter end. Inevitably, irrevocably; happy birthday? No such thing.

-Jerry Seinfeld

Our birthdays are feathers in the broad wing of time.  ~Jean Paul Richter

1. Have a party

Party! Party! This is actually the most common form of celebrating any birthdays. A gathering for the family or for her and her friends could definitely make her smile for the rest of her day. Food, wine and laughter, that's what our mothers want or missing when they are quiet aware that they are getting older.

2. Give her flowers

A flower gives the effect of sweetness and thoughtfulness. Our moms will definitely love to have flowers on their birthdays. Except, for those mothers who are suffering from pollen allergies. However, choose wisely what kind of flowers you will give and what colour too. This is very practical too if you have a garden in your house. :)

3. A note and card will also do

My mom doesn’t want flowers but she likes letters. It makes her cry. So, notes and cards that tell how much you appreciate them will make them happy they will probably cry, like my mom always does. This is very practical and very affordable too.

4. A diary or a memorabilia

Give her a diary or a scrapbook of your memories of moments you shared with her. Memories are good to reflect upon, for the past could always give a lesson or joy when read or seen through a memorabilia. Thus, also making her birthday, a moment to remember.

5. Indulge her

Foods, dress, jewellery, or even go with her in a place of solitude where she could rest. Our moms are always busy every day, so why not make their birthdays a day of rest. Treating her unto spa or salon is also great!

6. Cook for her

Why not let our mothers have a rest and cook them their favorite dish? Just be mindful of their diet and health, eh.

7. Surprise her

Surprise! Surprise! There are many forms of surprising your mom on her birthday. Just for instance, is not to greet her for the rest of the day but in the end of that day, you surprise her of a gift or something that your mom loves.

8. Do what she likes to do

Music, sports activity, beauty session, shopping, or even drinking a cup of coffee with her could make a difference on her birthday. Do what she loves to do (with her). That will definitely make her birthday special.

9. Make her dreams or even one of her dreams come true

I remember the movie "A Walk to Remember" wherein Shane West made the dream of Mandy Moore possible, though it seems so unattainable. I cried when I watched that movie. Maybe you'll make your mom cry too, when you could help fulfil one of her dreams.

10. Respect and Love

This is the last yet, I believe that this is the most important part of letting our moms discover that we appreciate them. And this is not just required on their birthdays but everyday of our existence while our moms are still living. I believe this is the best gift too. Respect and love for our parents, is, seldom seen in this generation, but I believe that in every one of us, there is a child's heart that fears, respects and loves our parents especially our mothers.

Be Creative and Greet your Mom!
