BEACH DAYS THEN & NOW

SIGN OF THE TIMES by b. Malin

In my black pin striped Bell Bottom jeans, I did the "dance" of the times.

With my children in tow, off to the beach we would go as I hummed a song of the times.

"Look at the Hippie" I heard someone say. I looked around to see that "they" were talking about me.

So I smiled and waved, thinking I was the "rage" as I held up two fingers to make the "Peace Sign". It was the sign of the times.

By the time my children were grown, I was on my own....Husband gone....It was the sign of the times.

I dated, made my mistakes, regrets...I have a few. But I held my head high, gave a few sighs, for that was the sign of the times.

Met a Man, a "special man".....Oh we had our fights along with afternoon delights, making love on many a night. He had a boat and "Sunsets" to die for, and endless weekends to share. And some "glorious" beaches out there.

It was understood we'd marry someday when problems were less hectic for us. On year three, we say...."oh what the heck...Lets do IT!" It was a sign of the times.

We did what was best, and everyone dressed and smiled happily at my wedding dress, as we exchanged our vows, and ran down the beach, throwing flower petals every which way. The ocean whispered, "" good luck you two....Enjoy the sign of the times."

THAT WAS THEN....THIS IS NOW       by b. Malin

It's a quarter to three as we plop our chairs down, and Lover Man sets up the umbrella.  It's Labor Day at the beach!

With big shades on, we're ready to walk and do our talk above the sounds, the wonderful sounds of the ocean's waves hitting the beach.

The sights are a marvel to see....Sand Castles adorn the beach, children clapping and running around making the sounds of delight as they run into the ocean. Parents close at hand, to give them a hand,  and  quick to catch them when they fall....Laughing through it all. And the Lovers doing their private stroll.

The seagulls teasing one another with "food treasures" that seem so abundant because it's Labor Day. They now take flight and seem to be dancing over our heads, as they call out their own brand of music, quite a sight to see.

It's like a parade, a beach parade up and down the beach. The "great bodies" the "good bodies" the "let it all hang out bodies". The young, the old, some look like "centerfolds."  Some look like they might fold! But never you mind, It's Labor Day At The Beach.

It's the end of summer for some...But for us homebodies, it's just another lovely September, Labor Day at the Beach. The best kept secret at the Jersey Shore....is September at the Beach. Of course October is fun too. And if you ask the "Surfer Dudes", they smile and say, We Surf year round here on the Jersey Shore!

But today is Labor Day...Tomorrow it's back to the "grind", back to work and school, many happy memories left behind, until next year, until next Labor Day....Hope you and yours had a happy one....or at least a peaceful one.
