Popular Mother's Day Gifts

Updated on April 4, 2015

About 85% of Americans plan to celebrate Mother's Day. How will you celebrate this day, set aside by Congress in 1914 to honor all mothers the second Sunday of May? While we have to thank Anna Jarvis who lobbied relentlessly for the creation of this day, let's not forget our very own mothers.

This Mother's Day, show your appreciation and make her proud! courtesy of

Mommy Dearest

For all the boo-boos you kissed away

For all the monsters you fought and will slay

For weaving laughter and joy

Strands of pain and strain fade.

For all the times you scoop me up

A shoulder to bear

An arm to embrace

For generous helpings of sustenance

Served on clean slates of unconditional love.

For the times you waited in the doctor’s office

braving my screams

needles, blood and gore.

For all the times you sat through the same old DVD

just so you could be near

to watch my smiles and frowns as I follow the story line.

For all the miles you’ve driven

No distance too near or far

Transversing mazes and spaces.

For the times you pretend not to see

when I am romping in the mud and rain

caution to the wind, wind in my face

and you know it will take more than Tide

to make it right.

For all the times you hold me close

and speak sweet manna from heaven

when my heart aches and I couldn’t quite tell why.

For all the times you let me fall

so you can lift me up to touch the grace of God

For leading me in the hard and narrow path

so one day I’ll be dancing in the broad street of heaven.

God must have known

When he made you my mom

for I couldn’t have ask for a better one.

If you don't like poems or maybe mushiness is not your style, there are other tested ways to show your love and appreciation.

Say it with Flowers.

A chinese proverb says, "A bit of fragrance always cling to the hand that gives roses."

A study by BIGresearch shows that 68% will send blooms and bouquets. They make bold statements with arrays of carefully chosen sprigs of her favorite flowers. Thanks a bunch--always in style and they leave a fragrance behind on your hands and in your mother's heart.

Hectic schedule can turn mothers into fashion castaways (ok, not all ). Why not surprise her with clothes after all 32% of mothers say they would love to have some new clothes to jazz up their wardrobe.  you are familar with her tastes, surprise her with her favorite types of clothes.

According to BIGresearch again, 28% will head to jewelry stores to buy that special exquisite piece or pieces for their mothers.  After all, jewelry speaks of worth and beauty and according to Sonia Henie, "Jewelry takes peoples's minds off your wrinkles."

Books and CDs

For moms who love to read and listen to CDs while on the run--26% will opt for this. Now, you can get your mother the Kindle she has always wanted or an electronic reading gadget that she can lugg around, without carrying the whole library around.

Chocolates and Gift Baskets

How can you go wrong with chocolates and gift baskets?  Mothers can always use a little indulgence and Mother's Day is the perfect reason to let go and enjoy life a little.

Personalized Items

Personalized items add a personal touch.  Paint a vase at your local craft store or put together a bunch of pictures. Make a card with computer software, bake her a cake or plant a tree in her yard in her honor. It may cost you an arm and a leg or nothing at all.

My Jia Yu Lady--you're too young to have a college daughter! Maybe her sister, but not mother?

Well, you deserved a good mother's day gift--there's always tomorrow. Hopefully, your computer will wake up and you will buy yourself the gift. Enjoy your day (no, I don't mean to rub it in--I really mean it--nothing is going to get us down)'cos the Jia Yu lady always has some fuel in the reserve tank.

Very lovely thoughts. I especially liked "you let me fall so you could lift me up to touch the grace of God". Will look forward to more of your writing thoughts!
