RECIPE FOR THE "ROSCON DE REYES" OR THE THREE KINGS CAKE
MY CHILDHOOD
My family is a very religious family so my memories as a little girl come around most of religious holidays, celebrating Christmas, All Saints, the Wise men´s day and even Thanksgiving (not exactly religious but a beautiful holiday anyway). Celebrating together, singing, sharing, enjoying those are words to describe the way my family spend holidays. One of my favorite traditions are all the related to Christmas time, and this is the reason for writing this hub. I´m not a very good cook so as you can imagine I´m not in charge of making Christmas dinner!!! Most of the time is my mom, my mother in law or my aunts those in charge of preparing the delicious meal.
Our Christmas meal includes Turkey, pork, stuffing, salads, Peruvian tamales, and some desserts. Now that I moved to Spain, I found out that seafood is included in Christmas meal too!! So my Christmas dinner is actually a blend of Peruvian, American and Spanish flavors all cooked to perfection.
But since I do not have a recipe of my own I would love to share one of my favorite desserts: The Roscon de Reyes or The Three Kings´ Cake. Every January 6 we celebrate the day the Three Wise Men came to visit Baby Jesus and brought him some presents. After singing and saying some prayers we share the delicious cake called "Roscon de Reyes". This is actually a round cake (looks more like a big doughnut) nicely decorated with candies, whipped cream or dried fruits. Most of the times there is a little present inside and the one that gets that present also gets some privileges, for example is the one in charge of buying the Roscon de Reyes for the next year. Here in Spain, sharing this delicious cake is a must, there is no holiday without this typical dessert.
RECIPES FOR THE ROSCON DE REYES
- 500 gr. wheat flour
- 200 ml warm milk
- 100 gr sugar
- 30 gr yeast
- 2 eggs (one for brushing the dough)
- salt
- 100 gr margarine
- dried fruits
First of all, mix the yeast with a little of warm milk, sugar, and flour. Wait 15 minutes until it doubles it´s size. Now we must mix the rest of flour, milk, salt, margarine and sugar with a wooden spoon. Keep kneading until getting a soft dough. Now add the yeast mixture and continue kneading and try to get off all the air.
Now try to form a "Roscon" this looks like a doughnut and decorate it with dried fruits. Rub it with the egg and bake it at a 200 ª C preheated oven for 10 minutes or until golden brown. This recipes makes two medium Roscones or cakes.
Finally decorate it with some sugar and if you want put some whipped cream or even vanilla custard, but don´t forget to hide the little present inside!!!
