They come out in numbers, in all sizes and shapes, to occupy every room of my house. Each winter, beginning at Christmas, snowmen (and snow-women) perch in corners, on shelves, among the dishes, and anywhere a space can be found to bring warmth into my heart. The simple whimsical charm of a snowman puts a smile upon the face of all who see him.

Over the years, through gifts from family and friends, my collection has grown to over 200 snowman figurines, decorations, blankets, dinner ware, picture holders, and much, much more. People who visit are delighted to hear the musical sets play a favorite carol or to see the animated snowmen dance and sing.

Diversity Is Best!

As I mentioned earlier, my collection ranges from stuffed toys to fine china. And if you ask me which one is my favorite piece, I couldn't make that choice; each one is special and has a story behind it. Like snowflakes, each one is unique.

My husband's favorite snowman stands about three feet tall. We call him Snowie. I created him by hand nearly eighteen years ago. I remember how much fun it was to piece him together, each stitch seemed to bring him to life. He stands a silent sentinel at the bottom of the stairs greeting visitors as they enter through the front door.

I've posted a few snowmen from my collection below as an example of the assortment one can find in this special collection. Similar to people, they don't have to fit a certain mold. Diversity is wonderful, even with a snowman.

The Perfect Snowman

My online search for "how to build a snowman" produced 366,000 results (YouTube). Of course, the hit song from Frozen was among the top outcomes; and, it does feature a great snowman. Actual tutorials on building outdoor snowman sculptures are over 80,000 on the site. In 2007, Bob Eckstein, wrote a book on the history of the snowman and he claims this art form existed in medieval times.

People young and old love building snowmen. I remember how elated I was as a small child to see the first snowfall each year. I couldn't wait to get outdoors to join my sisters in sculpting the best snowman ever! Later as a mom, I enjoyed snowman building with my son in the cold mountain air of Virginia. Now as a grandparent, I cannot pass up the chance to demonstrate my skills of the art to our grandchildren! I urge all parents to get out in the cold and experience the fun with your kids. It is the perfect way to pass a snow day as a family.

I suppose the perfect snowman is totally symmetrical in form with each facial feature balanced and body adorned in appropriate winter clothing. I have seen some pretty artistic snowmen but the best ones are usually asymmetrical, wear off-key facial expressions and mismatched accessories.

Why Collect Snowmen?

He commandeth the snow to go down upon the earth . . . Job 37:6a

In spite of the bitter cold, I love winters up north. Those who live there can relate to the first snowfall and how it blankets the world in glistening white powder. The tree branches look amazing draped in sleeves of glittering snow. The ability to create something from these tiny sparkling particles brings a thrill to my heart.

Having said all that, I live in the sunny state of Florida and the only snowmen you can actually build are made of sand. It seems a bit silly to post one in your front yard at Christmas when the background features palm trees and flowering bushes. Still, we place a "snow-wire-man" out front each winter and at night we peek through the window to watch its twinkling lights and observe him tipping his hat to all who pass by the house.

It doesn't matter where you live, or what kind of weather you have, a snowman will always place a warm smile in your heart. And that is why I will continue to collect them.

Your title is just so appropriate for this hub. These cute snowmen and snow women look so cute and as you said they are heart warming. I have often seen them at the gift shops and you have tempted me to own at least some of them. Better still, I think I will make them on my own.

Great to know you own so many of them. A delightful and well written hub with lovely pictures.

Merry Christmas to you! Voted up!

Love the title as it draws you in, though I did guess what this was about! I love building snowmen; what is it about them? Maybe it's the transience of them that we love them so much. They are always good; impossible to have a bad snowman because, as you say, they warm people's hearts.

Sadly, we have little snow here in the south-west of England; when I lived in the south-east we had more and a snowman was a yearly thing.

I love, along with my two daughters and their children, the DVDs of 'The Snowman' and 'The Snowman and the Snowdog', animated versions of the Raymond Briggs stories which I'm sure you know.

Great heart-warming hub to read on Christmas Eve, teaches. Thank you and a Happy Christmas to you!

Just plain cute. :) Growing up in Florida I always wondered what it would be like to build a real snowman. Your snowie is a darling! One of my favorite collected snow guys is a cookie jar that plays a tune when opened--no sneaking cookies from him!

Snowmen always bring a smile. Your note on diversity makes me wonder how people in other countries build their snowmen. In doing a quick search I found this from Texas--can't even do that in Florida! :)

I love those last chapters of Job so much for they give us a good glimpse of our Creator, a look at some of the tangible knowledge of His omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence. Snow is just one example of how simple yet how intricate His work in the earth is. Thank you for the reminder today! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours!

      Hi and WOW!

I loved this hub about Snowmen and Snow women, and I believe your collection is greater than the one I had years ago. I started years ago and stored most of my collection in an old steamer trunk in the barn. When I went to the barn to collect my Snowmen, women and babies---the trunk was gone.

My husband donated the trunk without looking inside to a church auction. Now, I never store anything without a big note on the storage container.

And, my snow pillows were in the trunk I bought at the Tampa Fair when I was a Girl Scout.

It was a bitter-sweet memory---the church's made money for families in need. I try not to feel bad---I am still trying.

      Merry Christmas

Bravewarrior, we do miss out on the fun of snowman building here in Florida. The sandmans are just not quite the same, but most people would like to build one by the ocean on a sunny day than stand in cold weather up north. Have a Merry Christmas with family and friends.

Then upon finding these men to be snowmen I shouted with glee! We were blessed with two days of beautiful snow recently and I managed to build a mini-snowman out in the front. I dressed him with a white, sparkly scarf and a red knitted hat. He looks so handsome.

Nell, I love Paddington Bear. Did you see the latest movie? We collectors are a bit dedicated aren't we? Have a beautiful Sunday.

Hi Audrey! I would have loved to see your snowman adorned in his sparkly scarf and red hat. They are such fun and I like how you name each one. Thanks for coming by and adding to the hub interest. Be blessed!

Paula, we did have a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed the snowmen through the New Year. I also wish you the most wonderful experience and joy in 2015.

Poetryman, Thanks for the feedback and comment. I hope you are having a wonderful day.

Will, I imagine Iowa provides the best of snow for building these creative sculptures. Glad you stopped in, dear friend.

      Dianna,

Somehow, I missed this one. I am glad I found it. Voted up and pinned so I can save for next winter. I know my sister will love this one, too. She is more the one into winter collections.

      Blessings,

      Kim

Just thought I would take another look at your snowmen. Is Florida staying as much cooler as the rest of the east?

Don't know h0w I missed this one, Dianna. Your collection of snow people is adorable and amazing. I can relate on two levels: I, too, live in Florida so the real thing is not available. And I, too, have a very large collection. Not of snowmen though, but of pigs - all sizes, all shapes, all colors.

The tiny little snow people in your first photo is my favorite.

I heard of people collecting teddy bears, but you are the first I know that collects snow people dolls. I do remember building a snowman with my dad in winter in Holland, but for the last 40 years I have not seen snow and I must admit I'm not missing it. Loved your photos.

Hi there, fellow Floridian! It's hard to think about snowmen when our temp is in the upper 80's or even into the 90's!

      Love your collection!

Stay cool.....today we are having more thunderstorms. I'm not complaining, cause we need the rain.

My stepmother loves snowmen and will leave hers out from before Christmas until spring when snow season is over. It's neat that you put them out in Florida! :-) Neat hub. Thanks for sharing.

What a cute post and also a cute collection. We rarely see a snowflake in Houston but remember fondly the real snowmen we made in Wisconsin.

Rabadi, thank you for the comment and I'm you found it warming to your heart.

Peggy, there are no snowflakes here in Florida but our snowmen help us pretend we are in a winter wonderland.

Rajan, snowmen have a way of putting a smile on a person's face.

THank you everyone for stopping by to see the collection.
