Easter Poem: The Day they Chose Me

Updated on March 26, 2013

The day began like any day

The sun was beating down

I stood beneath a shady tree

Whilst gazing all around

Desire for change had left my thoughts

Each day became the next

Eat, work and sleep was all I knew

No more I could expect

Until I saw the men approach

Each leaning on a staff

They brought me out into the sun

And led me down the path

I did not know these men at all

To where we went or why

But as we reached the city gate

There came a sudden cry

Another man was standing there

Surrounded by a throng

A fear rose up within my heart

There must be something wrong

What do they want with poor old me?

What use to them was I?

And yet I knew within my soul

Whatever, I would try

They brought me to the central man

I looked into his face

His smile was gentle, carved with love

His eyes were filled with grace

And then I knew why I was here

I felt my spirit rise

New purpose to my life was brought

A brightness to my eyes

The man was heading through the gate

O'er palm leaves on the ground

The crowd was cheering all about

But yet no horse was found

My heart within me leaped with joy

My soul began to sing

Not just a useless donkey now

But transport for a King.

Stunning poem, for the King of Kings, God bless you. He is also my King and if a donkie could be used so can I be.

@Eunice - yes, one lowly donkey got to be a fulfillment of prophecy as he carried the Messiah. Not only that but he willingly submitted to that process despite never having been ridden - quite amazing for an animal notorious for its stubbornness.

What an awesome piece!! voted up and beautiful. This donkey was not an ordinary donkey anymore. It got a new purpose and carried the noblest, finest, magnificent, awesome . . . of all kings, Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Sometimes we feel that way too and then Jesus comes and give us purpose to live on. Thanks for sharing this.
