Easter Poem: The Day they Chose Me
The day began like any day
The sun was beating down
I stood beneath a shady tree
Whilst gazing all around
Desire for change had left my thoughts
Each day became the next
Eat, work and sleep was all I knew
No more I could expect
Until I saw the men approach
Each leaning on a staff
They brought me out into the sun
And led me down the path
I did not know these men at all
To where we went or why
But as we reached the city gate
There came a sudden cry
Another man was standing there
Surrounded by a throng
A fear rose up within my heart
There must be something wrong
What do they want with poor old me?
What use to them was I?
And yet I knew within my soul
Whatever, I would try
They brought me to the central man
I looked into his face
His smile was gentle, carved with love
His eyes were filled with grace
And then I knew why I was here
I felt my spirit rise
New purpose to my life was brought
A brightness to my eyes
The man was heading through the gate
O'er palm leaves on the ground
The crowd was cheering all about
But yet no horse was found
My heart within me leaped with joy
My soul began to sing
Not just a useless donkey now
But transport for a King.
