When Momma Prayed
When Momma Prayed
Welcome to Mother's Day May 13, 2018. Today I we are gathered to honor our mothers. In doing so I would like to refer to one mother in the Old Testament. Her name is Hannah. We find her prayer in the First Book of Samuel.
1 Samuel 1:10-15
10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.
11 And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.
12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.
13 Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.
14 And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.
15 And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.
“but have poured out my soul before the LORD.”
What an amazing statement! Mothers often pour their soul before the Lord especially when praying for their children.
The true example of a mother’s heart. The following prayers are from a mother pouring her heart out before the Lord.
As we honor our mothers today let us look at one mothers prayers over her children’s lives.
Though dads may be a child’s first hero, mothers are usually a child’s first best friend.
My child I don’t know why God called you from my womb. Though he has taken you from me, you will live your entire life in eternity. I know one day I will see your face, hold your hand, and gaze at your eyes. I will see you as a boy or a girl and let you know how you would have changed my world.
Lord you have blessed me with a baby boy. But God I am helpless, I need you Lord to take care of him. This jaundice and breathing issues is in your hands. God heal him, give me the joy of raising this baby boy.
God you have given me now three sons, I wasn’t even supposed to have one. You have blessed me God, let me bring them up to bless you. God, I pray at least one of them will do your work.
With our adoption of this baby girl our family is complete today God. Thank you for blessing us again and trusting us to bring this child into our home.
My youngest boy God, send someone to him, don’t let him drown in these waters. God all three of my sons now are in danger, please Lord rescue them. Bring them to shore safely.
This was as a mother sat on a lake beach holding her two month old daughter and the youngest son, six years old was caught in an under tow. Only days earlier a teenage boy drowned in the same spot.
The mom’s 10 year old son pulled his little brother to safety as the 12 year old son also came to rescue.
God I am helpless to break this fever. God help my little girl. She isn’t even a year old God, you would not have given her to us to take her away again. Keep her safe from these convulsions while she is going to the hospital God. Watch over her and the doctors as they work on her.
God, I have four children, 16, 14, 10, and 4. God they need their mother. Open heart surgery hasn’t been done very much, God it is too new of an operation. God, the doctors say I can’t go on living without it. God, take care of my children if I don’t make it through the surgery. Look over them, guide them, provide for them.
God my oldest son is leaving to serve this country. God I pray through his years at sea you keep him safe.
These are relatively few prayers one praying mother offered for her children. There are countless more of which could never be spoken.
Did You Pray
Momma taught us the power of prayer early in life. This poem is dedicated to my mother, Martha Jo (Anspach) Adams Feb.10, 1937 - Feb. 10, 2017. In all of life's situations momma would always say, "did you pray?"
Prayers of joy, prayers of sorrow.
Prayers for each new day, prayers for every tomorrow.
Prayers of laughter, prayers of tears.
Prayers of triumphs, prayers of fears.
Prayers of victory, prayers of loss.
Prayers of gain, prayers of counting the cost.
Prayers of pain, prayers of healing.
Prayers standing still, prayers of kneeling.
Prayers of doubt, prayers of power.
Prayers of wonder, prayers each hour.
Each remind me today,
What momma used to say
Did you pray.
