Why Christmas Music Matters
Was it really more than 30 years ago? I sometimes wish for a time machine to go back, just once more.
Stille Nacht by Mannheim Steamroller has been a Christmas favorite for more than 30 years.
Its fitting to remember this beautiful piece of music on the day that our son got engaged and our daughter moved into a beautiful, new home. Fitting because they are all grown up and gone, but I still have my memories of 4 little Mullinger's.
As I grow older and become the generation which looks back more than forward, those days of long ago become more precious. We continue to make new memories, but the memories from those halcyon days are the sweet days I never want to forget.
Long ago when they were all little and still under our roof, coming home from Grandma Mullinger's house on Christmas Eve, we would play this song on the tape player in the car. All 4 kids would be snuggled in their coats, some asleep in the back seat as we drove the hour back from Cincinnati to where we lived.
I doubt they ever knew, but I would look out my car window, while listening to this beautiful song, and look up at the dark, cold Christmas sky and I would imagine that night centuries ago when Mary cradled her sleeping Son and I felt a mother to mother kinship with her.
It cannot be explained but all mothers know that feeling of overwhelming love.
Once home, we tucked them all into their beds and kissed those sweet, little faces goodnight.
Silent night.
Stille Nacht.
