According to the Barbie Wiki, the 1988 Happy Holiday Barbie is the doll that made Mattel realize they could market dolls directly to adult collectors. The dolls sold out quickly when they were released, and immediately started to command high prices among collectors. The Wiki says this was the beginning of the "Barbie craze" that reached a peak in the 1990s.
