Finding the Best 50th Birthday Gifts for Men

Updated on August 30, 2017

What should I buy a man for his 50th birthday?

Choosing a 50th birthday present can be tough, such a milestone demands a special gift. Most people find buying things for men hard, maybe because they are not quite as vocal as most women about the things they wish they owned ;-)

Often the standby bottle of scotch, the silly t-shirt (that he will probably never wear) or a store voucher ends up being the choice. Recently after a spate of fiftieth birthdays in our family I decided to try to come up with something different, something that showed I had put a bit of thought into the gift-giving.

Below is a list of ideas that I have gathered from the last year of giving. I hope they help you in your quest for the perfect 50th birthday present.

The Ultimate Sports Movie Pack - Put together a pack of movies on his favorite sport

My husband is a mad sports movie fan, he loves any feel good, chase your dreams type of sports movie, films like Field of Dreams, Remember the Titans and Hoosiers are among his favorites. One birthday I tracked down a list of the top 20 sports films of all time and bought the first 10. It was a hit. He totally loved it. Next time you have to give a 50th gift you could do something similar or focus on just his favorite sport.

Get him on the techology train - Buy him an i-Pad mini

Even if he is not a gadget man an i-pad mini makes a great 50th present. They are super easy to use and whether his passions are sport or music or even cooking there are apps and tools that will make his ipad ad his new best friend and drag even the most reluctant computer user into the 21st century.

For the Gourmet - Stir his creative juices

Last year I attended a friends husband's 50th and could not come up with a gift idea that seemed to work. I resorted to a gift voucher - I really hate to do this - and guess what he bought himself, a fry-pan. Think outside the sex-based generalizations and consider what he likes to do.

The Gift card/voucher debate

Do you think vouchers are a good birthday gift?

OK sometimes a voucher is a good choice

If you are buying for a man you know very little about a voucher can sometimes be the best choice.
