Finding the Best 50th Birthday Gifts for Men

Updated on August 30, 2017

What should I buy a man for his 50th birthday?

Choosing a 50th birthday present can be tough, such a milestone demands a special gift. Most people find buying things for men hard, maybe because they are not quite as vocal as most women about the things they wish they owned ;-)

Often the standby bottle of scotch, the silly t-shirt (that he will probably never wear) or a store voucher ends up being the choice. Recently after a spate of fiftieth birthdays in our family I decided to try to come up with something different, something that showed I had put a bit of thought into the gift-giving.

Below is a list of ideas that I have gathered from the last year of giving. I hope they help you in your quest for the perfect 50th birthday present.

The Ultimate Sports Movie Pack - Put together a pack of movies on his favorite sport

My husband is a mad sports movie fan, he loves any feel good, chase your dreams type of sports movie, films like Field of Dreams, Remember the Titans and Hoosiers are among his favorites. One birthday I tracked down a list of the top 20 sports films of all time and bought the first 10. It was a hit. He totally loved it. Next time you have to give a 50th gift you could do something similar or focus on just his favorite sport.

Owning your own collection of the 10 best sport films for a chosen sport is the stuff of legends for most men.

Baseball: A Film by Ken Burns (Includes The Tenth Inning)

If he is a passionate baseball fan this classic documentary series on the history of baseball will make the perfect gift.

You can't help getting older, but you don't have to get old.

George Burns

Get him on the techology train - Buy him an i-Pad mini

Even if he is not a gadget man an i-pad mini makes a great 50th present. They are super easy to use and whether his passions are sport or music or even cooking there are apps and tools that will make his ipad ad his new best friend and drag even the most reluctant computer user into the 21st century.

For the Card Shark

Poker night with the boys will be even better with this tabletop accessory.

Middle age is when a guy keeps turning off lights for economical rather than romantic reasons.

Eli Cass

For the Gourmet - Stir his creative juices

Last year I attended a friends husband's 50th and could not come up with a gift idea that seemed to work. I resorted to a gift voucher - I really hate to do this - and guess what he bought himself, a fry-pan. Think outside the sex-based generalizations and consider what he likes to do.

There are lots of celebrity chef cookbooks to choose from.

Silly 50th Birthday ideas

Ok if none of these seems quite right you could always go with one of the silly 50th gifts.

Laid Back Vintage Dude Hat, Adjustable, Grey

This baseball cap has been a huge hit - what man does not think he is a legend!

Over The Hill Birthday Fun Gift Bag Tote of Treats

A great choice if you really want to rub in he is "Over the hill"

The Gift card/voucher debate

Do you think vouchers are a good birthday gift?

OK sometimes a voucher is a good choice

If you are buying for a man you know very little about a voucher can sometimes be the best choice.

Which type of gift would you be most likely to give a 50 year old man?

Turned 50 a few years ago. For me it was great to have LOTS of friends and family at a surprise party. Sometimes we get so focused on the right gift that we forget to focus on the person in other ways

I will hit the half century this summer. To be honest, I would have been quite happy with a bottle of Scotch and a silly tee shirt - which I would almost certainly have worn. However, you have certainly raised the bar with your gift suggestions here - so now the family are under pressure! Thanks and blessed.

@seemmee: I don't think there is a big difference between 50th and 60th gifts for men Seemmee. A tablet or an e-reader is a good choice.

@anonymous: You might be surprised Andi. They just got a bunch at my mum's nursing home and they are getting lots of use. Never too old for an iPad.

If I gave my 55 year old Dad an iPad, its only use would be a coaster.

Something that would keep them young. 50 year old's need to be reminded that they are still young and not yet over the hill, so something adventurous like a voucher for a sky dive or some sort of electronic gadget to keep them up to speed with the modern age would be good. At least, that would work for me 10 years from now!

In my humble opinion, an iPad will be great :).

Something he can enjoy like something that goes with his hobby. Something to relax like a vacation, hot tub, New recliner. It all just depends on the person and the budget.

See, I can't really answer that because it all depends on who it is and what is going on with them. : The easiest would be some kind of gag gift with meaning, I guess, if I had to pick one thing.

I really like the way you paid attention to what people were getting for their 50th and decided to come up with your own list. Your topics of sports movies, gadgets, and game rooms are perfect for many 50 year olds. Maybe something to do with cars too?
