Campground Halloween - A Summer Tradition

Campers Celebrating Halloween

I'm sure you've heard about Christmas in July, but have you ever celebrated Halloween in August? Around the country, campgrounds celebrate Halloween one weekend during the summer complete with trick-or-treating, haunted houses, Halloween parties, and with the added fun of ghost stories around the campfire.

If you're a fan of Halloween, then when planning your summer vacation, consider checking out a campground on their Halloween weekend.

I remember celebrating Halloween in campgrounds when I was a kid. They were full of impromptu costumes, decorations, and fun. I even remember winning a couple costume contests year. One year I went as a robot, with RV septic piping and attached to my tin foil covered box body. Another year, my sister and I won as Hefty and Wimpy - yep, we dressed like garbage.

Spur of the Moment - Homemade Costumes

The Art of The Unplanned Costume

The thing about Halloween at the campground is that there will be a lot of people who either didn't know or forgot that Halloween was happening this weekend. They didn't think to pack costumes with their vacation items, so now they have to improvise something.

I love this.

People with limited supplies use their creativity to create costumes. On the Halloween in October, people put a lot of planning (and money) into Halloween. They think long and hard on their costume, and try to make it perfect. On Campground Halloween, it's just the opposite. People whip together a costume with what they've got. It's not really that important what people dress up as, just that they try to do something. Many costumes don't even have a name - they are just something. Everyone just looks silly, and has fun.

Halloween String Lights

Pack a set of Halloween string lights away in the utility drawer of your RV to pull out on on Summer Halloween night. You're going to want some lighting.

Decorate your campsite so when the sun goes down, the Halloween fun continues.

Scary & Spooky Music - And Sound Effects

Pop on some spooky music with sound effects and spread the Halloween spirit throughout your area of the campground. The echos of your spooky music will set the mood for the evening.

This is so strange and interesting. I love it! I never would've guessed that something like this happens every year.

I have never heard of Campground Halloween, but it sounds like so much fun! When I used to camp as a kid, we always went to a campground on Labor Day weekend and there would be a pet parade, so we would dress up my grandma's fat schnauzer and join the parade around the campground. That's about as close as I've gotten to Campground Halloween. :)
