Flashdance Costume

Updated on September 28, 2014

How to Make Your Own Flash Dance Costume

One of my favorite movies has got to be Flashdance. Not only do I love the Flashdance costumes but I am a huge fan of Jennifer Beals. She plays the role of a beautiful girl willing to do just about anything to attain her dream and is called Alex Owens. To fund her dream, by day she's a welder and at night she dances in an exotic club. However, these are just a means to an end as she has always wanted to be a ballet dancer.

However, getting into a top ballet school isn't easy and they are expensive. She knows the only way to get into her dream dance school is to work her butt off and to ace the audition.

Meanwhile the audience gets to see Alex in lots of different looks that range from a welder outfit to various dance costumes. Not only are these outfits great for dancers but they make great costumes for themed parties or for Halloween.

Key Scenes From The Movie

Not sure which of the Flashdance outfits you want to go to the party in. Here's a quick rundown of some of the key scenes in the movie to choose from. I love how she always looks amazing, even when she's just wearing jeans and a loose top!

Look Like An 80's Dancer

If you want to look like Jennifer Beals from Flashdance then you're gonna have to get her look. The first thing that makes her memorable is her big hair. This was a very popular look in the 1980s. You can copy her look with an 80's wig.

Welder by Day

What's so surprising about this movie is the lead character has always dreamed of being a dancer. It's such a girly career that it's so unexpected that to pursue her dream she has a job as a welder during the day.

The great thing about this costume is you could start the night off as the welder chick and somewhere during the party remove some layers and have the dance costume on underneath.

Alex mostly wears jeans so it should be easy enough to have a leotard or sexy lingerie on underneath all this clothing and no-one will even be able to guess.

Alex wears this to protect her pretty face at her day job. She has her name written in white on the front of the mask. I guess that makes it easier to know who's behind the mask, but I doubt there are that many welders that have her body!

She also wears a black welders jacket to protect herself from any sparks or other dangers of the job.

Why I Love Flashdance!

To me Flashdance is such an inspirational movie. Alex would give anything to be a ballet dancer, but she doesn't come from a privileged background. She doesn't have the money or the connections to get into a ballet school. She doesn't let that stop her from reaching her dreams, even when she is unsuccessful at her first audition.

Instead of sulking in the corner, she works hard during the day as a welder and practices her craft at night as an exotic dancer.

What You Need to Make Your Own Version

Alex Owens, played by Jennifer Beals, not only has some great dance moves but she also knows what to wear to get noticed. When she works out to her favorite track Maniac and goes for her auditions, she likes to keep things simple and sticks to black.

She's not your average ballet dancer and is more "street" so you would never find her in a pink tutu. Instead she normally wears either a black leotard or black high necked top with matching dance pants along with matching ballet shoes and a pair of leg warmers.

This is very similar to the leotard worn in the movie. Ok it's not a high leg leotard like the one worn by the main actress in the movie, but that was the kind of leotards they wore back then in the 80's. They aren't as popular now and you might want to be comfortable at this costume party you are going to.

Iconic Scene From The Movie

When most people think of Flashdance they remember that scene with the dancer on the chair and the water hitting her while she's wearing almost nothing.

If this is the Flashdance costume you want to recreate then that's fairly simple too. She begins in an over-sized suit. It's most likely a guys suit, so raid a guys closet that you have access to. Here's one time you get to play dress up in his closet. You might want to ask first.

Then you can wear a pair of silver dance shoes and some sexy lingerie. It looks like she's wearing a red teddy in the clip below

J Lo made this music video as homage to the movie Flashdance. Clearly she's a big fan!

A Modern Take on The Flashdance Look

if you are looking for a more modern version of the Flashdance outfit then you can check out the music video below featuring Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice from the Spice Girls) and her copy of It's Raining Men.

The video is a cross between the final dance scene from Flashdance, even including the part where she falls and has to start again. Then it kinda gets mixed up with what looks like the kids from Fame.

This song was used in the Brigitte Diary movie.

I've always wanted to dress up like a dancer for Halloween, but I feel I don't have the body to pull this look off.
