Put Together Your Very Own Black Swan Fancy Dress Costume
Looking to recreate the elegant Black Swan costume worn by Natalie Portman in Darren Aronofsky's cinematic masterpiece, Black Swan? Well look no further for the most incredible costume you can wear to any party.
I recently created my own Black Swan costume for Halloween in 2013 and got a tonne of compliments, so I thought I would share how I achieved the look with everyone else looking to become the dark Swan Queen. I've collected everything you need for an incredible Black Swan fancy dress outfit here on one page, including both things I used myself as well as things I wish I'd used!
If you're torn between cosplaying as the Black Swan or the White Swan, or you have a friend who would like to join you as the Black Swan's good alter ego, you can also check out my guide to creating the Perfect White Swan outfit on my blog.
Black Swan Leotard and Tutu
This is the leotard with attached tutu I used for my costume, and believe me it looks amazing. The tutu is stiff and good quality and looks just like the one in the movie. I tucked the straps into my corset (see below) since Nina Sayers has bare shoulders in the Black Swan scene. If you don't feel comfortable revealing so much of your legs, you can wear a separate loose tutu underneath. Don't forget to pick up some white dance tights to wear with it!
Black Swan Corsets
Next up you'll need a lacy corset to wear over the leotard. On the right is the one I used, and I've really fallen in love with it. It is such good quality for the price, and it looks gorgeous as a costume. Another upside to this piece is that it also looks fantastic on its own, so this part of the costume you can reuse again and again!
That said, it isn't the only black corset out there, and there are plenty more that would suit the style, from very plain to super frilly (I'm a fan of the lace and frills, so those are always my choice!) Just shop about and you are sure to find one that is perfect for you and makes you look great.
Black Swan Tiaras
A black tiara works best for the Black Swan costume, but those are surprisingly hard to find, so a silver plain one will also look fantastic. Alternatively, our friends on eBay have put up some fantastic replicas of the actual crown the Black Swan wears in the movie, so if you want to stay true to the source material, I recommend you pick one up for your Black Swan costume!
Alternatively, if you are up for a bit of arts and crafts, why not make your own black swan tiara? Above is a very fun and easy to follow tutorial on how to make a beautiful tiara to match your costume.
Black Swan Makeup
Black Swan make up looks fantastic and is very easy to do. That's me with the makeup on the right, so use that picture as a guide. First up, lighten your face with some white face paint. Don't go overboard, just use a little and blend it well.
Next, using Rimmel London Eyeliner, draw the black shape shown in the picture around your eyes, starting at the nose and going around the shape of your eyebrows. Color that shape in with the eyeliner and allow it to dry.
If you need a little more guidance on doing the makeup, here is a great tutorial with step by step instructions.
Black Swan Eye Masquerade Mask
If you don't want to wear the make up,this elegant Black Swan masquerade eye mask is a fantastic alternative. It also saves you buying a tiara as well as makeup and so on, so it's a good idea for any one who is making a Black Swan costume on a budget. I love how glittery it is too!
Another cute eyemask is featured on the right which is designed to replicate the makeup that Nina wears while dancing as the black swan. Pretty cool!
Black Swan Ballet Shoes
Finally, you'll need some cute ballet shoes to finish off the costume. Here are the ones I used. They were comfy and high quality and just perfect for the job. It's recommended you buy one size bigger than your normal size with these types of shoes. Slip them on and you'll be ready to dance like the Black Swan.
There you go! Those are all of the bits and pieces I used to make my Black Swan Halloween costume. I hope you found some ideas that work well for you and look amazing.
