Flag Day in the USA

Updated on February 9, 2018

Our American Flag

June 14 is designated as Flag Day In The USA

Our American Flag, the Stars and Stripes, was first designed and made by Betsy Ross. According to legend, she was asked to do this by George Washington. Our flag was officially adopted by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777 and the flag resolution was passed.

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America adopted June 14 as Flag Day in 1907 and it is still a mandatory observance by all Elks Lodges across the United States. It was not until 1949 that Elk Harry S. Truman made the proclamation for June 14 to be a national observance for our nation's flag.

Thank you to our Boy Scout Program

The Boy Scouts are taught Patriotism at an early age and do much in the community to promote it. Our community of Pendleton SC is very fortunate to have Cub Scout Pack 94 and Boy Scout Troop 94

What Happens On Flag Day?

Flag Day Observances will be occurring all across the United States of America

All observances of Flag Day will vary but they will all have the following things in common:Flag Raising CeremonyPledge of AllegianceSinging of National Anthem

Be a proud American and either attend a Flag Day Ceremony near you or be a participant. This is an important way for us, as Americans, to show our Patriotism.

Pendleton Elks Lodge performed a Flag Day Ceremony - June 14, 2009 on the historic Village Green in Pendleton SC

Each of the nine flags that have represented the USA were presented and explained. It was a most impressive ceremony.

I'm sure we are all very appreciative of living in a wonderful nation such as the US of A. And yet one gets caught up in the daily hustle & bustle of the American work\life. So it's always good to step back for a moment and reflect upon what America and it's proud flag represent. Bravo!

I wish that more people would fly the flag on a regular basis, not just Flag Day and the Fourth of July.

Excellent lens. We absolutely need to continue to honor our veterans and our flag still stands for something substantial.

There is about as much fact in Betsy Ross designing and making the first flag as the photo of GI's raising the flag at Iwo Jima. It is at best faction and at worst downright fiction. But any propaganda during wartime, especially if you are victorious, lives as fact. Never truer is the statement that in war, the winners write the history books.

Excellent information on Flag Day. It seems weird now for me having been granted citizenship but then moving back to the UK because of visa issues with my fiancée (now wife). No flag day here, now 4th July or Thanksgiving, it's odd after 15 years of being American to be back home and being a dual citizen.

We had a John Phillip Sousa LP that we played many times growing up, so listening to Stars and Stripes Forever brought back some memories of days gone by. I'll never forget the anger and disgust I felt the first time I saw people disrespecting our flag and our National Anthem at a football game. It used to be an uncommon thing to see. I was taught at an early age by my parents, school and scouts and later at The Citadel and in the Army to always respect and honor our flag and all that America stood for. The inmates are running the asylum today when our government and the supreme court allows all kinds of disgraceful public messages, but disallows the "Pledge of Allegiance" in our public schools, and disallows and desecrates the Lord's name & scriptures in Federal buildings, etc ad nauseum. Thank you Ohme for your support of our Flag, our Town & Country and the time proven principles our country was founded on. God Bless America!

Cohan's "Grand Old Flag" is one of my favorite songs. One of the things I love when I am on base at Patrick at noon is standing at attention wherever I am, on the corner of a street or in the middle of a parking lot, as the loudspeaker plays Our National Anthem. It concerns me when I attend a high school football game and see the teenagers laughing and playing around on the stands during its music. Our children are not being taught as we really appreciate all that we have under this wonderful flag. This is a wonderful lens, Nancy. Thank you so much! My husband would truly appreciate it.
