Not sure about sales, but profits definitely go up, a month before christmas let's say an xbox kinect is 200, with a free game and control, now christmas time, all of a sudden 300 just for the system, then you have to buy the game and control, another 100, the system itself still costs the same, why the price difference? Money. You don't want to be the loser parent, with the loser kid that doesn't have the xbox kinect? So yeah profits go up, sales no. They still sell the same amount of units that were in stores a month earlier, just make more money.

Holiday seasons, especially Christmas in the USA is the lifeblood of many retail businesses offering a significant portion of their sales and profits for the entire year. When the economy falters and individual consumers pull back on spending especially in the holiday season, it certain creates more jeopardy for some retail businesses.  At the same time, it is a shame that the Christmas season has become such a retail phenomenon.  Such is America.
