Make sure to get your spouse involved with this one!
Does he have a weakness for a particular food; coffee, tea, chocolate, macadamia nuts?  Something expensive that he doesn't buy for himself and isn't restricted by his diet.  There are gift baskets that cater to just about every taste you can think of.

Is he retired? Does he have a dream vacation spot he'd love to go "sometime"?  You may not be able to buy him airline tickets but you can get him a lovely travel guide to the destination.

Tickets to an event are always one of my favorite gifts to give and to get.  Something fun to look forward to after a holiday.

I guess it depends on where his interests are.

Does he like to read? Maybe you can give him a book or a subscription to his favorite magazine or newspaper.

Is he athletic? Does he run, play tennis or swim? Perhaps a pair of running shoes or nice comfy socks. Might even be a cap to shield his eyes when the sun is shining so bright. An earplug or swimming cap or even a nice sports bag where he can put his stuff in.

I agree with Barbara, get your spouse involved. He/she should give you a better insight on what your father-in-law likes.

    Good luck.

I have found that those kits you can get at hobby shops where you create or build something are great presents for a man in that age catagory. You can get him into model trains or airplanes, oil painting, slot car racing, or building a ship in a bottle.

    Good luck,

The best gift we ever gave my father-in-law was a set of tickets to one of the Presidential Libraries. He loves history and is reading his way through the biographies of all the presidents.

I like this gift for him because it doesnt need to be dusted or stored. And it was a fun time to get together with him and show interest in something he is interested in. Other fun no-need-to-dust gifts are: rodeo tickets, movie tickets, restaurant gift cards, or sporting event tickets.
