Best Gifts for Tomboys - My Favorite Ideas!

Updated on September 26, 2014

My Favorite Gifts for Tomboys

This is a collection of gift ideas for girls who are Tomboys. I was a tomboy and some of these ideas are things I actually got as a kid, or things I would have loved.

I was a girl who liked to do boy things. I didn't like girly things.

Whether the Tomboy that you are buying for likes sports, playing outside, or science, computers, nature, cars, construction, etc, I hope that you'll find the perfect gift on this page...

Gifts for Girls who Build Things!

Build a Working Catapult - Great Construction Kit for Kids! - I wish this was available when I was a kid!

Pathfinders Medieval Catapult Wooden Kit
Pathfinders Medieval Catapult Wooden Kit

Build this catapult with real wood! The wood is pre-drilled and pre-cut. Have fun putting this together and firing marshmallows, play-dough balls, and other small things across the room!

Tomboys often like doing things with Dad. Construction projects like this one are a good Dad & Daughter activity!

Great Gift for Girls who Like Cars! - Build a race car, a crane, and more!

Erector by Meccano Super Construction Set, 25 Motorized Model Building Set, 638 Pieces, For Ages 10 and up, STEM Education Toy
Erector by Meccano Super Construction Set, 25 Motorized Model Building Set, 638 Pieces, For Ages 10 and up, STEM Education Toy

These look really cool. I never had too much interest in cars, but for some reason cranes intrigue me. Regardless, this looks like a metal construction set ideal for the pre-teen or teen Tomboy.

Build your own Pneumatic Hydraulic Engines! - Great science kit for kids ages 8+

Thames & Kosmos Air + Water Power
Thames & Kosmos Air + Water Power

This set allows you to build 15 models! It looks like a pretty comprehensive set!

I've always liked gears... I think gears are fun for many kids!

Build Solar Powered helicopter, car, bike, windmill, or oil derrick. - Put these together with screwdrivers and wrenches... and make things that go!

Eitech Deluxe Solar Powered Construction Set
Eitech Deluxe Solar Powered Construction Set

This is a toy that is suitable for ages 8 to well into the teens. Adults could even have fun with this one!

Sporty & Outdoorsy Gifts

Gift Ideas for Tomboys who are Wild or Active Outdoors, or Like Sports

A Scooter is a ton of fun! - I loved riding scooters with my friends!

Razor A Kick Scooter
Razor A Kick Scooter

A great gift idea is a scooter, skateboard, roller blades, or a bicycle.

This scooter is great for a wide range of ages - from age 4 all the way up to age 12 or so (up to 143 pounds). It's fun to use and comes in many different colors. It folds up for easy storage or transportation.

Read the reviews.

Basketball Hoop for my Driveway - This was on my wish list for many years... Never did get one though.

Lifetime 1221 Pro Court Height Adjustable Portable Basketball System, 44 Inch Backboard
Lifetime 1221 Pro Court Height Adjustable Portable Basketball System, 44 Inch Backboard

Shooting hoops is fun! It's a great activity for kids. It's an outdoor sport that can be played with just one or two people, or a whole bunch of kids. Great for the long summer days, and for parties. If you'd rather your kids stayed around the house, setting up a basketball hoop is one way to keep the kids busy!

This one is ideal for kids under 12. Amazon has other ones for older kids.

My Own Tent - Great for Family Camping Trips - This one person tent appeals to kids and teens because they like privacy!

Eureka! Solitaire - Tent (sleeps 1)
Eureka! Solitaire - Tent (sleeps 1)

Camping outside, whether in the backyard or at an official campground, is a fun activity! I had a one person tent like this one, and my parents allowed me to set it up next to their tent when we went camping. It made me feel so grown-up, and made me much happier about going on family camping trips.

All I wanted for my birthday was.... A Pocket Knife! - My Mom said I could have one as long as it "locked" so it wouldn't close on my hand!

*** This gift idea depends on the age and maturity of the kid or teen. ***

Buck Knives 505 Knigh Knife Folding Pocket Knife
Buck Knives 505 Knigh Knife Folding Pocket Knife

I got one like this one when I turned 12. It was a very memorable gift. I carved some wood with it, but mostly I just carried it around when I walked in the woods or went bike riding.

I wanted it so bad... I remember picking it out at the hardware shop with my Dad. Of all of the birthday presents I don't remember, this isn't one of them!

Unfortunately, I don't have it anylonger... Just the memory of it. Somewhere between moves, it disappeared.

Nerdy or Geeky Gifts

Gift ideas for girls who like science, computers, or gadgets.

Electronics Kit for Kids - No Soldering Needed! - Make over 300 Projects, including a Radio, Doorbell, & Burglar Alarm

Snap Circuits Classic SC-300 Electronics Exploration Kit | Over 300 STEM Projects | 4-Color Project Manual | 60 Snap Modules | Unlimited Fun
Snap Circuits Classic SC-300 Electronics Exploration Kit | Over 300 STEM Projects | 4-Color Project Manual | 60 Snap Modules | Unlimited Fun

I had an electronics kit, although not as clever as this one appears to be. This one is for ages 8+. This is a great gift idea for a nerdy or geeky Tomboy, or any girl that loves electronics.

Do they love computers? Maybe they'd like to program! - Learning to program is a lot of fun, and this book will get them started!

Programming for the Absolute Beginner
Programming for the Absolute Beginner

There is something very rewarding about writing a program that works. Programming is a great skill to learn. I was really into it when I was about 14, and having them learn to program is one of the better ways for them to spend their computer time.

I'd be adding to the list the Annoyatron. https://edukits.co/product/the-amazing-annoyatron/

Ideal for the Tomboy as an indoor toy.

For the outdoors, add the MBS all terrain skateboard. I could be wrong, but think they are designed in Colorado.

just stumbled on this post and say a lot of things on this list is what i wanted as a present. Barbie dolls did not last very long before heads were pulled off! I would say having a knife is not only for a tomboy, but should be had for about anyone, for emergencies.

I would say my favorite toy was Tonka Trucks. My mom told me that she had at times had to take them out of my bed, because i went to sleep with them.

I think a perfect gift is finding role models that are tomboys they can associate with.

Now only if they came out with more female characters that are tomboys and not dressed off to show off. i would like to see that. As well clothes that would appeal to us, then all the pink and feminine ideas they always have.

Thank you, HOTBRAIN! You have saved a desparate grandmother of a 9-year-old tom-girl. I was at a total lose as to what to get her. But, I have found many of your suggestions are great ideas. I plan to purchase several for Christmas presents and I am sure she will be delighted. Thank you, again for this very useful site. Happy Holidays!

I love this lens! When I was growing up, we didn't have money for lots of toys. But I had a doll or two, and some paper dolls. I was not "into" "pretending" with my dolls. My little sister imagined all kinds of adventures for her paper dolls - I just wanted to cut out the clothes - DO something. My brother was the one who got the Erector set. Boys had the fun toys, which I always coveted. What I would have given for a set of Lincoln Logs! Thank you for helping little girls who want to DO things!

This is a great list of ideas. I don't have a tomboy but I do have a 10-yr-old boy who would absolutely love all of these. Angel blessed for all the new things I haven't found yet.
