Learning to Knit or Crochet
Don't Stab the Yarn - Learning Takes A Little Patience
I started knitting when I was a child, but I never really learned more than the basics. When I was a young mom, I taught myself how to crochet a bit and then started making "Granny" squares.
Both knitting and crochet come down to mastering a few stitches and then learning to read the patterns. To a newbie, knitting patterns and crochet patterns seem like they're written in a secret code. Take heart - if you have a good key to the instructions you can understand the instructions and appreciate the "shorthand" when a pattern gets long or takes many pages.
I first learned to knit when I was about 9 years old and over the past 50 years I've made doll clothes, children's sweaters, hats and other knit projects plus lots of easy knit holiday crafts and decorations. I taught myself to crochet when I was in my early twenties. I need to state right up front that I have mastered neither knit nor crochet. In fact, I consider myself a beginner even after all these years.
For the past 10 years my yarn and needlecraft supplies have been sitting patiently in storage waiting for me to start knitting and crocheting again. I'm starting over this fall with knitting and crocheting by making easy fiber and yarn crafts for the holidays - Halloween is the first holiday I'll be celebrating this year with easy knit and crochet decorations and gifts.
