Joy to the World - Free Sheet Music, Lyrics and Chords

Joy to the World is a favorite Christmas hymn worldwide with its rousing words by Isaac Watts and one of my favorites. It may have been inspired by G F Handel's Messiah but the melody of Joy to the World was not actually composed by Handel. Its origins are surrounded in mystery and its earliest version appears in English hymnbooks of the 1830s.

On this page you will find free sheet music and resources to play this beautiful traditional Christmas carol.

Joy to the World - Karaoke with Lyrics to Sing Along

Who composed Joy to the World

And why does it sound so joyful?

Joy to the World has a bright and cheery melody and certainly the downward movement of the notes of the tune calls to mind a joyful peel of bells! The musician William Holford revised a tune he called Comfort, published it, and attributed it to Handel as it was similar to the Messiah choruses Lift Up Your Heads and Glory to God.

Holford may have been the original composer of Joy To The World, or it may be an anonymous melody. An American composer called Lowell Mason (1792-1872) changed the tune-name to Antioch in 1839, and united it with Isaac Watt's hymn lyrics for the first time. The attribution to Handel was retained and Handel's Joy to the World was born! Many composers and arrangers have been moved to arrange Joy To The World or use it as a theme for more inventive compositions. It is just that sort of rousing tune! I have done a guitar ensemble arrangement of Joy to the World myself.

Joy to the World Lyrics

The Famous Hymn by Isaac Watts

Joy to the World , the Lord is come!

Let earth receive her King;

Let every heart prepare Him room,

And Heaven and nature sing,

And Heaven and nature sing,

And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the World, the Savior reigns!

Let men their songs employ;

While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains

Repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,

Nor thorns infest the ground;

He comes to make His blessings flow

Far as the curse is found,

Far as the curse is found,

Far as, far as, the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,

And makes the nations prove

The glories of His righteousness,

And wonders of His love,

And wonders of His love,

And wonders, wonders, of His love.

      Another of my favourites. This one, I feel, sums up the very real joy of Christmas. A lively, triumphant carol.

      @anonymous: Might that be the Scorch plug-in? Several things with Scorch, firstly it is completely safe so don't worry, secondly, things tend to sound pretty horrible in Scorch which is why I always try to produce a synth part and record as MP3, thirdly, Scorch won't work in Chrome. I have contacted Avid about this, but they still haven't updated it to make it compatible. On the positive side, nothing in Scorch ever does justice to the real thing so you didn't miss so much! Thanks for visiting! :)

      Unfortunately, the SATB version needs some odd plug-in that I do not have.
