New Year OR same old story

Updated on January 14, 2011

Another New Year.Let Us Hope For Good

When a tiny 6 year old can ask a question that stops and makes you think

It´s time to take notice.

What IS the answer?

What made him think

(l ask myself at the kitchen sink)

¨What´s so different today, mum, we had parties and fireworks last night?

l lean against the sink

realising he means New Year

What IS different after last night?

l walk away from dishes , leaving them in the sink

and sit with my son

who,though he´s so young,

has certainly made me think.

We´d told him that fireworks would light up the sky

To 2010 we were saying goodbye

A New Year was coming, FRESH-- a new start!

¨¨The house looks the same , mum

We all look the same,

Dad´s watching the news on t.v. looks the same.¨¨

Yes, l understand, the wars still go on.,

people are sick, someone is missing, someone´s been murdered

O, dear little boy, How can l explain?

HOPE! That´s how l explain.

We celebrate, son, because a new year begins,

we hope in our hearts it will bring better things-.

Last year was hard for millions of people.

Äunty Pat died , mum¨

l know and uncle Dale passed on too.

We´re only one family we had lots of sadness in 2010

But we can hope-- look forward to a better year.

Some people learn to do better, after they´ve done something wrong

So we hope that millions will do better--- be strong.

And be kind, give to others, hope that their lives can change.

¨What does´hope´really mean, mum?¨

¨Well a bit like a wish.

but if you wished you could fly

you know it won´t happen.

If you HOPE what´s the difference?¨

Ër l know won´t be able to fly, birds fly in the sky.¨¨

But l can hope if l ask dad he´ll take me to the park¨

¨Good, so you can hope he´ll say ýes´if you ask him

As we all hope for more serious things,

For those things we have to ask HIM!

¨You mean God, mum¨

l do son, l hope and pray for children like you to have a better world

When you grow up, l hope you´ll work hard,

Be happy, help others, love a girl............

¨¨Not a GIRL, mum, Blah!. Yukky!,

I´ll go and ask dad about the park and hope he says yes

and we play ball till it´s dark......

My cute little boy, like most of his age,

Hee Hee How different it soon will all be,

Girls will be all-important

He´ll forget about climbing a tree.....................

As for me l hope for good news,

All over the world we sure need it..

like Janus the god who is January

One face looks back at the old year

the other looks forward to the future with hope..

Nature brings hope.....

The snow will soon be gone, the flowers will return

The trees will .fill with leaves again

Yes nature can hope and it comes true every year...

So l go back to my dishes , my heart filled with cheer.

Janus---January---Janus Roman god of new beginnings.

Let´s look forward not look back,..........
