The Royal Treatment: Purple Area & Accents Rugs

Finishing your decor palette with these fun-to-fabulous purple accent and area rugs is a novel way to add drama while grounding your favorite space.

Purple is the color of royalty and it's no wonder: it's a perfect melding of rich reds and mysterious black hues resulting in luxury and opulence that few choices on the color wheel entertain. But put simply, purple rugs make for the ideal crowning glory ~ in reverse.

Along with the purple rugs featured here, I've added a few decorating tips to help you decide what pile, texture and tone your room needs for the perfect finish to an opulent space you'll love coming home to.

Scroll down for a peek at unique, decorative Purple Accent and Area Rugs to enhance your indoor experience.

Let's get started!

As I mentioned earlier, much like the placement of rugs, 'lines' present in some rugs like those I've shown here, can create an illusion of infinity. These lines can help elongate - or shorten- wall spaces. Runners and longer area rugs with a weave that runs along the length can produce the illusion of more space along shorter walls. You might be privy to this trick with fashion, were it's advised not to wear horizontal stripes if you've a big middle, as doing so will make you look 50% bigger! Aside from the fashion faux pas, lines do work to your advantage with your decor. You can find out just how well a rug can help in your space ahead of time: cut several strips of newspaper and place them side by side with a space in between to create the stripe effect. See how the lines help or hinder the floorspace? These rugs either have a weave that produces a linear effect or the design boasts enough lines or striping to get the job done. It only takes a few minutes to test your results beforehand and it will save you time and trouble if, when the real rug is delivered, you decide against it. Heres a few examples that may work well to expand your floor space.

Round rugs like this luxurious purple leather one, here can really break up cold, harsh lines that often result from modern furniture pieces in square or rectangular floor plans. Too many straight backs in couches and chairs can make the room look stiff and uninviting.

Round coffee tables with a similarly-shaped rug underneath can make the perfect interruption without seeming out of place. It's a good idea to balance your decor. If you see the room going 'over-the-edge' in one direction, introduce a piece that will relax the overstatement.

A round area rug like this one is perfect for softening those raw edges. Isn't it lovely?

Keeping to your budget is one of those important considerations you just can't afford to ignore. I know, it's not always fun ~ especially when you find the gotta-have rug or other decorative piece. Trust me; I've paid too much for a painting once and to this day, I can't fully enjoy it knowing I splurged where I had no business doing so. What I've found though, is there's always a comparable, inexpensive piece that will suffice; you may just have to look a bit longer but it's out there! These dark purple shag rugs are super cheap (in the good sense~ money-wise), have the rich hues you may be pining for, deep, shag piles, and will serve you well for quite some time. And the price tag sure doesn't hurt. Going cheap for nondescript and plainer pieces like solid rugs like these allow you more freedom to invest in more substantial accessories or furniture ~ or simply enjoy your savings. While there are more substantially-priced rugs, for sure, those inexpensive finds, here support the idea that you can find a great alternative for most pieces.

Where there's a need to visually expand your limited floor space these classic purple Oriental area rugs will work quite well. Place a long runner or rug with the shorter wall to give the appearance of a wider floor space. Or place the rung on the diagonal (fancy way to say, "slanted") to make your room look wider. Play with the placement until the desired results are achieved. You'll see the difference immediately when the rug is in its place.
