Let's Rock 'Em and Sock "Em

Did the idea for the Rock 'Em Sock "Em Robots come from World War II or from the 1950s fighting robots? That is an interesting question that requires a little investigation.

The first version of the Rock 'Em Sock "Em Robots were actually made by Marx Toys in 1964. That is the version that I had as a child. It was much larger than the versions you see today made by Mattel. I remember my Father stubbing his toe on it once in the dark and he was not too happy about me leaving it on the floor.

The original version, as do subsequent variations, were named "Red Rocker" and "Blue Bomber." I never really liked the color red and since it was my game, I was always blue. After many times of playing, I also remember memorizing certain quirks of the game which helped me almost always defeat my opponent. That was the advantage of owning it.

During the years, it has gone through many stages and is now also an electronic toy. It has spun off into other areas of memorabilia including T-shirts, ornaments and other items. Some of which I show on this website. They were even depicted in the movie, "Toy Story 2." Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots are considered a pop culture phenomenon.

As for the origin of the idea of the robots, I have not found a definite answer. I do know that some claim that the creation was based on the battling robots of the 1950s movies. However, if you look at the poster illustration to the right, it clearly shows the phrase, "Rock "Em and Sock "Em" was round during World War II and may have also influenced the early creators.

The World may never know!

My son gave this to a friend for his birthday. The next day I saw his parents at school and they were commenting about how much they loved the game. It's amazing that this toy has survived for so many years and now a new generation of kids are enjoying it.
