Here Are Some Really Scary Halloween Movies

Get Your Scare On With Anyone Of These Horror Films! Really scary movies have been making us sit on the edge of our seats for decades. The films that frightened me as a child would make you laugh now...but the films that have frightened me as an adult can still make the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. If you like this genre take a look at my favorite scary movie list. Let me know which movies frighten you...and if you can think of any ones I may not have seen...let me know...I could use a good scare this Halloween! So come on in, sit down, turn on the DVD player and get ready to be afraid.

OH THAT'S SCARY!

Why Do People Like To Be Frightened?

What's So Great About Scary Movies

Why watch a horror film? First of all, when you watch a frightening movie, it's not the same as being in a dangerous situation. We know we are not in danger, but we can experience it and it is exciting. It is commonly known as the fight or flight response. It is how our bodies respond to fear or anxiety...and it is the same if the fear is real or imagined. A chemical reaction to the feeling of fear sends hormones into action. Hormones like cortisol, adrenalin, epinephrine and norepinephrine So when we watch a scary film our heart starts to pound, our breathing gets quicker, our pupils dilate, our sight gets sharper. And you thought you were just having fun!

Scary Halloween Movies are a Halloween tradition in my house. I just happen to be CRAZY about a good scary film. And there are so many good films that can make you afraid. Do you remember Alfred Hitchcock? He was the king of suspense and I watched his films when I was a child. He was a scary looking guy, he had a scary voice and his films were absolutely frightful...and yet, unlike the horror films we watch today, they were not very violent or bloody. He used the audience's imagination to frighten us. Yes, we literally scared ourselves.

Silence of the Lambs

One Of The Scariest Movies I Ever Saw - No, It's Not Saw

Do you remember that scary guy and his gal...Hanibel and Clarice? The Silence of the Lambs is a frightening movie and it's on my list of the scariest movies I have ever seen.

The Silence of the Lambs
The Silence of the Lambs
This is a movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It stars Jodie Foster as the likable Clairce Starling and Anthony Hopkins as the canibalistic and cruel Dr Hannibal Lecter. This manica is a truely scary character...and it's easy to be afraid for Clarice.

Psycho

Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho

Psycho The Movie (1960)

Psycho is a disturbing horror film, released in 1960 and directed by Alfred Hitchcock, it lets us inside the mind of a killer. The story was inspired by true life events involving convicted murderer and grave robber, Ed Gein, otherwise known as the Butcher of Plainfield. Psycho's main character Norman Bates, played by Anthony Perkins, owns the roadside Bates Motel, a drab little place that sits below his creepy house on the hill. Norman is a paranoid schizophrenic who also suffers from multiple personality disorder. He believes his dead mother is still alive and killing people who are trying to come between them. In reality, Norman is the one dressing up as his mother, with a wig, dress and huge knife, and he alone is murdering guests of the Bates Motel.

For its time, Psycho was one of the scariest movies ever made. The shower scene is the most memorable and frightening, and it features Janet Leigh as motel guest Marion. While Marion is in the shower, a shadowy figure approaches and the riveting background music begins, putting you on the edge of your seat.

The Scariest Shower Scene Ever - Will The Real Mrs. Bates Stand Up

The next scene shows a large knife being wielded, slashing at Marion over and over. She screams incessantly as blood begins to pool within the water flowing down the shower drain. Another eerie scene in Psycho is when you finally view Norman dressed as his mother. The look on his face is so evil, it will send chills down your spine. His eyes are black and his smile is extremely wicked, as if he is possessed by the devil himself.

Priest

Priest (2011)

Humans And Vampires Make For A Scary Movie Plot

Priest is a 2011 horror movie based on a Korean comic book. The film takes place in a futuristic world where humans and vampires are constantly at war, and priests are more like bounty hunting soldiers, blessed by God. Once the wars finally stop, the remaining priests are retired by the church, as they think all vampires are either dead, or living within their designated reservation lands. In order to stay safe, humans must live within the church's protected city walls and not venture out in the unknown.

Everything changes when a priest's family members are attacked, and vampires kidnap his niece. The priests band together once again and end up taking on one of their own, who was captured during a past vampire raid and turned into a human and vampire hybrid. They all thought their comrade was dead, but instead he embraced his new found power and used it to try to gain entrance to the protected city.

The Scariest Scene In Priest Is...

The scariest scenes in this film involve the purebred vampires, who are not human whatsoever. They tend to jump on their victims out of nowhere, devouring them until there is barely anything left.

Se7en

Seven (1995)

Brad, I'm Scared!

Seven (Se7en) is a 1995 horror-thriller film, centered around two homicide detectives that are hunting for a deranged serial killer. The veteran detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman) is teamed up with newly arrived rookie Mills (Brad Pitt). The pair set off to uncover the mystery behind these horrific murders, delving deeper into the psychotic mind of the killer. Each victim found has been selected to represent one of the seven deadly sins: gluttony, greed, sloth, envy, wrath, pride and lust. Detectives begin studying the crime scenes, as well as books about the seven deadly sins. What is unclear at first is if the killer knows or is connected to the victims? Or is it this someone just playing God because they feel the need to?

Eventually, detectives and killer encounter one another, on more than one occasion. The killer knows who Somerset and Mills are, however they do not recognize him as he moves around in plain sight with his barrage of disguises. In the end, the killer turns himself in to the detectives, but it is already too late. He has one last horrifying surprise for them that arrives by delivery van out in the desert.

Seven - Lots Of Scary Scenes!

One scene in this movie was quite horrifying and scary. The greed murder victim is so malnourished and emaciated, investigators believe he is dead. All at once, he springs to life and everyone jumps back in shock and disgust. This man was literally a walking skeleton at best, and how he was still breathing is truly a mystery. Scary or not, I could watch Brad Pitt all day long!

Scream

Scream (1996)

One Of The Best Slasher Films

Scream is a 1996 slasher movie from director Wes Craven. The film follows a group of high school students in Woodsboro, and despite the local law enforcement's best efforts, kids keep turning up dead, thanks to the killer known as Ghostface. At first, everything thinks it is all a big prank, and it is just some local kids going around trying to scare everyone. In reality, they are living a horror movie in real life, and have to follow the rules of past horror movies in order to survive.

Ghostface sadistically toys with his victims by calling them just before he kills them. In many instances, he is already in the location where he is phoning, watching his victims squirm as he talks to them.

Do You Like Scary Movies?

His infamous words "Do you like scary movies," chill his victims to the bone. Everyone is a suspect in this slasher flick and no one is safe from the killer's sick game. This movie has a few scary scenes, but the worst had to be the poor girl who was killed by the electric garage door opener, for she never had any chance of escaping before it crushes her to death.

Insidious

Insidious (2011)

Buy or Rent Insidious

Insidious is a 2011 supernatural horror film that follows a family moving into a Victorian-style house. As they are settling in, strange things begin to happen. The oldest son Dalton is lured up to the attic by noises and once there, sees something he cannot quite explain. All at once, his parents hear him scream and race upstairs to find their son on the floor with bruises. They chalk it up to he fell off the ladder and just needs a good night sleep. However when they wake in the morning, Dalton unfortunately, will not. He is not dead, yet is in a coma he cannot awake from. After a series of tests and a hospital stay, Dalton is brought home.

Strange instances continue, becoming worse. The family decides to leave the house, believing it is haunted. They settle in a new place, but something has followed them. The couple confides in the grandmother and she informs them this type of thing has happened before -- to Dalton's father. In light of this, they invite paranormal investigators and a medium into their home, asking for help.

What Did The Medium Reveal?

What is revealed by the medium is shocking. Dalton is a traveler, just as his father was, and is being held in another world realm by a demon. The only way to save Dalton is to send the father in after him. One of the scariest parts of this movie is a scene in the dining room, where the grandmother sees a demon lurking around the table. Not many movies can go the distance and make a person jump, but this film offered more knuckle-biting scenes than most.
