Skulls and Skeletons cakes and cupcakes are a fun way to add a bit of scary bones to Halloween, Dia De Los Muertos or any other occasion where skulls and skeletons play a role.
What you will find here are a collection of links, ideas and products to help you make your own skeleton or skull cake or cupcake. I've pulled together a lot of quick and easy ideas for making last minute skull cakes and skeleton cupcakes.
The idea for a skulls and skeletons cake and cupcake lens came to me when I was writing a new lens on Teaching with Skeletons at Halloween. Having a cake or a cupcake as part of teaching with skeletons would be a yummy way to reinforce the lesson so the kids might even learn more about bones.
Skull and Crossbones Cupcakes would be the perfect cupcake to serve at your next Pirates of the Caribbean Party.

Making Skull Cakes
With a Skull cake pan or cupcake pan, one can easily create a skull cake. A light dusting of powdered sugar is all that is needed to finish the skull cake.
An easy way to create a skull cake is to take a round or sheet cake and add a plastic skull on the top of the cake. The skull may not be edible, but it is very quick and very effective. For an even more elaborate look check the Halloween Skeleton Cake by Skip, using several skulls as decorations.
There was a very realistic 3-D skull mold made by Wilson this year which is now back in stock.
Last year I saw one at Michael's before Halloween and am now wishing that I'd picked it up. Thankfully this year, they are making making more of the 3-D skulls again. Be sure to order one below before it is no longer available for this Halloween.

One of the easiest ways to create a skeleton cake is to take an ordinary cake, round cake, cake sheet or in this case a pound cake and top it with a skeleton decoration.
I've included several skeleton and skull decorations that can be used to decorate the cake.
Note: For plastic items, you may want to put a layer of wax paper or parchment paper down before putting on the plastic skeleton or skull.

Easy Skull Cupcakes
Making skull cupcakes can be very quick and easy using several pre-made items. Start by baking the cupcakes in skeleton or skull baking cups and once cooked you have an easy skull cupcake.
Cupcake wrappers make it almost instantaneous to turn a regular cupcake into a special cupcake.
Cupcake toppers, cupcake picks and pre-made icing decorations are other ways to quickly make skeleton or skull cupcakes.
Using skull or skeleton rings, bracelets, and other party favors, punched or printed paper to decorate the cupcakes makes them festive without adding in any additional calories.

Skeleton Hand Cupcake
Another simple way of creating a skeleton cupcake. Using the skeleton handpicks (available from eBay or Oriental Trading) you can create a look like the skeleton is trying to escape from the cemetery.
Take a cookie and write in black letters RIP. Then put the cookie and the skeleton hand in a chocolate frosted cupcake. You might want to crumble some chocolate cookies or chocolate cake to get the effect of dirt.
To further enhance the look, use the Haunted Manor Cupcake Wrap to get the effect of an old style fence around the cemetery.
