St. Patrick's Day Celebration

Updated on March 14, 2015

St Patrick's Day A Day Of Celebration For The Irish Of The World

Wishing you the luck of the Irish! Dedicated to the Irish around the world. Being a Celtic Woman, I really enjoy celebrating St. Patrick's Day every year. But you don't have to be Irish to celebrate this holiday.

Shamrocks, reed pipes, and leprechauns - these are some of the many symbols that remind us of St. Patrick's Day. what is this early spring holiday all about? Though originally a Catholic holy day, St. Patrick's Day was made an official feast day in the early seventeenth century, the spirit of this ancient Irish holiday is still alive in many countries.and has gradually become a secular celebration of Irish and Irish American culture in general. So throw on some green and learn to party like the Irish!

St. Patrick is the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland, and is credited with the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Much Irish folklore surrounds St. Patrick's Day, also known as the "Festival of Patrick," or the "Feast of St. Patrick,". Although mostly unsubstantiated, some of this lore includes the belief that Patrick raised people from the dead. He also is said to have given a sermon from a hilltop that drove all the snakes from Ireland although no snakes were ever native to Ireland. Some people think this is a metaphor for the conversion of the pagans.

From parades to pub crawls, communities around the nation gear up for St. Patrick's Day Celebration.

This is a great lens, Pat!

I wish I had the time to read all of it and then go explore all the links.

I'll be celebrating by listening to Celtic Woman on St. Patrick's Day.

Now that I know you're a Celtic Woman, I'll be thinking about you, too.

Act on your dream!

St. Patrick's Day Wearing of the Green - History of the March 17 Celebration Around the World

If you are Irish or part Irish, or you have an interest in Irish Heritage, you may want to read this book to learn more about the dramatic story of how March 17 was transformed from a "stuffy dinner for Ireland's religious elite to the world's most public ethnic festival." St. Patrick's Day is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in America, long celebrated with more fanfare in New York than in Dublin.

"THE WEARING OF THE GREEN is the first book to chronicle the full history of St. Patrick's Day--from its medieval origins...exploring the shared heritage of the Irish through the evolution of this amazing holiday."

St. Patrick's Day

"As the one national holiday that is celebrated in more countries around the world than any other, St. Patrick's Day is the day when everyone wants to be Irish".

St. Patrick's Festival

St. Patrick's Festival in Ireland was established by the Government of Ireland in November 1995. The celebrations held in Ireland for St. Patrick's Day prior to 1996 paled in comparison to those held abroad. The principle aim of the Festival is to develop an international festival around the national holiday to reflect the talents and achievements of Irish people.

The first St Patrick's Festival was held over one day, and night, on March 17th 1996. In 1997, the word "Day" was dropped from our title and it became "St. Patrick's Festival", a three day event. The festival has since grown to become a four day festival.

St. Patrick's Day Parades & Events

The St. Patrick's Day custom came to America in 1737. That was the first year St. Patrick's Day was publicly celebrated in this country, in Boston. Today, people celebrate the day with parades, wearing of the green, and drinking beer. One reason St. Patrick's Day might have become so popular is that it takes place just a few days before the first day of spring. One might say it has become the first green of spring.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY SONG - A Rose is a Rose

A Wild Irish Rose in any language,,,,

Everyone wants to be a little bit Irish at sometime...

My Wild Irish Rose
My Wild Irish Rose,
The sweetest flower that grows.
You may search everywhere,
But none can compare with my wild Irish Rose.
My Wild Irish Rose,
The dearest flower that grows.
And someday for my sake,
She may let me take,
The bloom from my wild Irish Rose

St. Patrick's Day Party Toasts

St. Patrick's Day Toasts

May your glass be ever full.

May the roof over your head be always strong.

And may you be in heaven

half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

Here's to a fellow who smiles

When life runs along like a song.

And here's to the lad who can smile

When everything goes dead wrong.

Slainte!

@artbyrodriguez: Thanks for saying hello. My gg grandfather came to the U.S. in 1849 during the Irish famine. Others came many years before that, but maintained their Irish Culture.

Of course it is! The parents would never forgive me if it wasn't a day for family and celebration of our heritage.

Lots of St. Patricks Day and Irish info. Didn't see anything about Chicago painting the river green though - although that it taking it a bit far...

Sadly, Hollywood in Florida cancelled their St. Paddys Day parade this year due to lack of funds. This and despite the boost it gave to the local shops and restaurants too... Oh well...

      Great Lens, 5 *****
