Disney's The Little Mermaid - Released November 14, 1989

Based upon the classic tale by Hans Christian Andersen, The Little Mermaid is the 28th animated film released by Walt Disney Pictures. It tells the story of princess Ariel, the youngest of King Triton's seven daughters, who longs to know what the world is like above the sea. After saving a drowning man from a shipwreck, she seeks out the sea witch, Ursula, and makes a bargain - her voice for legs to walk on land - in order to find her true love.

Once on land, she locates prince Eric, but is unable to tell him who she is. As the clock ticks away, she tries to make him fall in love with her, so she can stay with him forever. Ursula interferes and disaster is narrowly averted, with the help of Ariel's friends, Flounder, a fish, Sebastian, a crab, and Scuttle, a sea gull - who call upon the denizens of the deep - to stop the sea witch.

Credited with bringing about a Renaissance in Disney's animated films, The Little Mermaid was a box office smash. Featuring songs and music by Alan Menken, children round the world know the songs Under the Sea, Part of Your World, and Kiss the Girl. Voice talents included Jodi Benson as Ariel, Pat Carroll as Ursula, Samuel E. Wright as Sebastian, and Buddy Hackett as Scuttle.

The Little Mermaid received two direct-to-video sequels: The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (2000) and The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning (2008). Disney also produced an animated television series based on events prior to the animated feature. The Little Mermaid was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2007.

Ariel, the Little Mermaid

Daughter of Triton

The sixteen year old Ariel is the youngest daughter of King Triton. Unlike her six elder sisters, Ariel dreams about learning about what is beyond the sea, and about humans. Forbidden from going to the surface, she none the less saves a human prince from drowning. After her deed is discovered, she strikes a deal with Ursula to walk on land.

Ariel's best friend is Flounder, a fish. She is also friends with Sebastian, a crab, and Scuttle, a seagull.

Ursula, the Sea Witch

Troublemaker

Once a part of King Triton's court, Ursula was banned, after she tried to seize the throne. Ursula does not have a tail like a mermaid, but rather the lower half of her body is like an octopus'.

Residing in the remains of a leviathan, she practices magic and performs spells for those who can pay, usually with their souls. She is served by two moray eels, Flotsam and Jetsam.
