Fighter Pilot Costumes from the Movie Top Gun

Top Gun was my favorite movie as a teenager. I'm not sure if it was the jet fighters, the US vs. Russia, Kelly McGillis, or the Kenny Loggins music, but it was one of those movies that just hit the right chord.

Now, years later, one of my favorite costume brings back to life this movie for me. The Top Gun costume is pretty easy to put together as well. There are four major pieces to creating a costume you can wear over and over again: the aviator jumpsuit, the aviator sunglasses, the flight boots, and if you go all out the pilot helmet.

This is a great costume if you are going out with a group of guys, everyone can be a different character from the movie, and don't forget to sing "You Lost That Lovin' Feeling" to your favorite girl.

There are many different type of costumes that come from the movie, but the most recognizable is the fighter pilot uniform. This includes the following:

  • Jumpsuit - this will be the piece of the costume that should be as authentic as possible and include all the patches you see in the movie.
  • Aviator Sunglasses - Although worn mostly with dress whites and off base activities, it helps sell the costume. Mirrored fronts with large lenses are the best.
  • Dog tags - Maverick, Goose, Viper, Hollywood, or Iceman, or become your own call sign.
  • Fighter pilot helmet - an optional accessory is it is expensive and who really wants to carry that around during a Halloween party?
  • Boots - Don't wear gym shoes with the jumpsuit, get some kind of boots that completes the costume.
  • Hat - Top Gun on the top will help people understand who you are suppose to be.

The last part of the outfit is you'll need to know the song "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers. This will complete the act.
