The celebration of Halloween dates back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain to mark the end of summer and also the harvest. This was the beginning of the dark cold winters which was often also associated with death. It was also a time when they felt a kinship with those who had died.

The Celts believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth on the night of the Samhain. During the celebration they lit huge bonfires and burnt sacrifices to their gods. They also wore costumes in the form of animal heads and skin.

They would set food for the deceased outside their homes and along the roadside and had candles lit to help loved ones to find their way back to the spirit world.
