Dress to attract good luck for the New Year

Updated on August 21, 2011

What to Wear to Attract Good Luck?

One of the things I always prepare in advance for New Year ’s Eve is what I am going to wear. I am a firm believer that whatever you wear and do during New Year’s Eve and the first few hours of the New Year are going to influence the rest of the year. So, I always make a point about wearing new clothes with the belief that wearing brand new items of clothing will encourage more new clothing to follow.

The tradition of wearing new clothes for New Year’s Eve extends throughout several continents and while people in most European and Asian countries wear red clothing to attract good luck. South American people seem to favour yellow as a good luck colour, except for Brazil where most people wear white clothing to bring good luck and peace for the year that follows. Other people prefer to wear green clothes, the colour of money to attract wealth for the coming year.

How to attract good luck ? Wear Gold

Personally I am going for a gold dress this year. Gold is associated with the sun and lucky for just about everyone. So, I'll be wearing a sexy little number in gold to frame my dark hair. If people wear yellow because of its strong association with gold, what can be better than wearing gold itself? I have not found the exact colour match for the shoes so I might go for emerald green stilettos and emerald jewellery to match up.

Wearing Yellow for Good Luck

South American countries have a tradition for wearing yellow underwear on New Year’s Eve. Yellow is associated with enlightenment and intellect, it stimulates the brain. Yellow is a colour which exudes optimism and decisiveness. The Mexicans wear yellow underwear to attract money and good economical vibrations. Yellow is their colour of choice because it is most closely associated with gold.

The underwear tradition can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when it was forbidden to wear bright colours. The people believed wearing yellow would bring them good fortune, so they wore the colour underneath their clothes. Tradition says you must throw your old underwear at the stroke of midnight on New Year's and put on a yellow pair. To be lucky, they must be new. Want some extra luck? Wear them inside out.

Wearing red clothes to attract good luck

Colour is vibration, and we all respond to it on many levels consciously or unconsciously. Wear red underwear and clothing on New Year’s Eve to bring luck associated to love. Red is a stimulant and dominant colour. Red is associated with warmth, prosperity and stimulation.

It’s better if your red garments are brand new and were given to you as a gift. This is the tradition in Spain and Italy. Asian countries also associate red to good luck and in China brides wear red wedding dresses instead of white wedding gowns.

Wearing Green for Good Luck

In Ireland, green is considered the luckiest of colors. It is also a lucky color for those born under the signs of Aquarius and Capricorn. Green signifies a positive change, good health, vigor, vitality, peace, and serenity. Green is also symbolic of ones strive to gain recognition and establish ones independence. Money and wealth are often associated with this color. That is why some people like to wear Green for New Year's Eve.

Green is worn to attract economic luck because green symbolizes growth, fertility and harmony. Green is a refreshing and restful colour. It is often associated with hope and optimism, freedom and balance. People who wear green clothes to attract good luck, often compliment their clothing adding coins and paper bills of any amount into their pockets to attract money. The larger the bills amount, the better.

Whatever colour you decide to wear for attracting money, love or just juck, make sure that you have plenty of fun!
