20 Creative Writing Prompts About Summer

Updated on March 8, 2016

Summer! It's a time of warmth, joy, and relaxation. Children are freed from the weekday pattern of school, and even adults can take breaks during this time. It brings thoughts of sandy beaches, warm sun, and booming block parties. Summer has inspired artists and poets throughout the world. Songs like "Summer of Sixty-Nine" by Bryan Adams, "Summer Nights" from the musical Grease, and "Surfer Girl" by the Beach Boys capture summer in a series of notes and chords.

Sometimes, it can be hard to come up with things to say about this wonderful season. So many people have talked about it that finding a new idea might feel impossible. Fear not. Today, I will give you twenty creative writing prompts for those hot summer days and sweet summer nights.

Prompt 1: School's Out!

Let's start with an obvious topic: the end of the school year. Everybody knows how the last few minutes of school feels. There is a twist to my "end of the school year" prompt. Write from the perspective of an inanimate object. You can choose any type of object, from a crayon to the bricks of the school itself.

Prompt 2: Beach Beauty

A person from 100 years ago is transported to the modern day, where they are asked to judge or enter a modern-day swimsuit competition. How do they react to the extremely skimpy swimsuits that the modern fashion industry has decided women ought to wear?

Prompt 3: Summer Skies

You have somehow grown wings, and are able to fly. When you manage to take to the skies, what sort of things do you see?

Prompt 4: When Summer Began

Every culture has their own tale regarding how the seasons came to be. Write your own season origin myth. Maybe seasons are a celestial being channel surfing - who knows?

Prompt 5: Reconstruction

A team of workers, lead by you, have been tasked with creating a replica of a national monument using nothing but sand and seashells. How can you make it? Do your workers get this done in times? How do you keep the water away?

Prompt 6: Image

Look at the picture on the right. Write whatever sort of thing comes to mind when you look at it. If you want a clearer prompt, try these three questions. Why is she walking in the middle of the road? Where is she going? Why is she carrying all of those balloons?

Prompt 7: Water World

A small child is allowed to go the most epic water park in the world. However, they discover they are too small to ride any of the water park rides. How do they react?

Prompt 8: Picnic Problems

Someone is making a romantic picnic for their significant other. They've got the perfect food, the perfect blanket, and the perfect novelties. The only problem is that they decided to have the picnic near a mosquito hatchery. This can only go so well.

Prompt 9: Jammin'

You have entered a contest at the local fair to make the most jam you can. While you started out with plenty of fruit that easily can be turned into jam, you now only have cucumbers. Fix this issue in whatever way you choose.

Prompt 10: The Super Skater

A ultra-cool skating star has returned to their hometown. All the fame and fortune has gone to the skater's head. What sort of things do they experience?

Prompt 11: Bicycle Days

You and a close friend are going on a bike ride in a beautiful neighbourhood. Write everything that happens. There's nothing dramatic here, just two friends and a summer bycicle ride.

Prompt 12: Fishing Fright

You're going fishing, and after hours of waiting, you've finally got a bite. A very large bite. You have managed to get the biggest fish in the pond on the end of your line.

Prompt 13: Summer Songs

Listen to one of the songs mentioned in the opening to this hub and write at least two hundred words about it. If you don't like them, you can go find other summer-themed songs instead.

Prompt 14: Bella Noche

You've been sent on an all-expeses-paid trip to Italy. You have nothing in particular to do and as many things as you want to see. The only thing is that your trip had been paid for the Mafia.

Prompt 15: Wanderer

You come across a stranger in the middle of the night. They tell you they are a wanderer and ask to stay at your house until the fall. Who is the wanderer really?

What is your favourite season?

See results

Prompt 16: Surfing Time

A local surfing competition is coming up. The incumbent champion has won for the past five years, and is incredibly obnoxious. Knock them down a peg or two, would you?

Prompt 17: Carnival Days

A grand carnival is coming to your town. Unfortunately, the carnival seems to be run by Murphy's Law, and everything is going wrong. You and your family decide to help out the carnival and get it on its feet.

Prompt 18: Fireworks

A reckless teen has decided that they want the best seat for a fireworks display, and they will do whatever it takes to get the best spot they can. What sort of stunts does this teen try to get that coveted spot?

Prompt 19: Sunscreen Wonders

Scientists have found a new sunscreen formula that works better than anything else. This sunscreen is created with a complicated formula, and can be tricky to master. People still want it. What happens to all the other sunscreen manufactures?

Prompt 20: Perfect Summer

Everything you wanted to happen this summer happens. The weather is beautiful. Your family doesn't fight. Vacations go perfectly, and the car on your road trip never runs out of gas or bows a tire. It's fantastic, but come fall, it's all going to come back to normal. What a pity.

This would be good inspiration for teens to get them writing. (I do that with my teen during the summer to keep her on her toes.) So often they don't express themselves creatively through language. Great prompts!

I love this hub. I wish I was an author now. I enjoyed reading about all the prompts about summer. I think that girl was walking down the middle of the road because it is in the country where there are very few cars and she is bringing the balloons to a children's party, but her head is down and she is being very thoughtful about her life. (That's what went through my head)!

      Voted up and awesome.

      Blessings to you.

Great ideas. I love all three of those songs you mentioned. The Beach Boys just evoke Summer all on their own, don't they?

This is imaginative and fun. No one could fail to produce a good story following one or more of your prompts.
