A Poem of Life - And How to Live It

Updated on October 26, 2016
Jodah profile image

John has been writing poetry since his school days. He was awarded "Poet of the Year 2014" Hubby Awards and has had two poems become songs.

A Poem of Life

Yesterday is in the past,

Today is here and now,

Tomorrow's promise still to come,

We need to dream somehow.

We cannot change the things we've done,

But learn from our mistakes.

Then put in practice lessons learnt,

Our future is at stake.

Sometimes troubles come our way

And fill our hearts with dread,

But if we're strong and persevere

We'll always get ahead.

We've loved and travelled, laughed and cried,

Grieved when loved ones died.

So celebrate the present time,

Face destiny with pride.

Optimism is the word

That needs to fill our mind.

Do not dwell on yesterday,

Just leave the past behind.

Love your family and your friends,

Show everyone respect.

Do not judge on race or sex,

And prayers do not neglect.

We must set goals that challenge us,

To strive and yearn for more.

Then tick each one off as they're done,

And in success we roar!

Our future is not preordained,

Though fate it plays a part,

And anything is possible

With an honest loving heart.

      Magnificent poetry. It reminds me of a poem I had written almost 6 years ago.

      In case you forgot how to smile;

      Even then, for a tender while,

      Leave behind your personal score

      And live the moment – today once more.

      If your eyes, for years, have remained dry

      And yet your heart, like a gray sky,

      Wants to burst into a heavy downpour;

      Let it rain – today once more.

      If you slept at nights without the gleam

      Of starlit wonders or moonbeam;

      Today, in the twilight, before the Sunset,

      Allow yourself to have one more dream.

      If what was to be said, has remained untold;

      Before the arrival of winter’s cold,

      Let your heart have its say

      Before the silence – once more today.

      None can presume what the future holds

      Or how the enigma called tomorrow unfolds;

      “Right now”, is all we have, to explore

      Our oblivious selves – today once more.

      This one is filled with beauty and charm, Jodah. Some real soul-searching here as well.

      On Tuesday night a poet did a 'running on the spot' performance at Poetry Cafe. It was all about what Sri Chinmoy calls Living in The Eternal Now. I believed the poet called it the Present Moment. It was an interesting performance, to say the least.

      Wonderful poem and inspirational too. Peace Bro.

      Audrey, I am so glad that I was directed to write this just when the message was needed by someone such as yourself. It is beyond my comprehension how this happens but it seems to occur quite often. People tell me the message in something I have just written is relevant to them at that moment. I never planned this. I wanted to write a short fiction story but was inspired to write this simple poem instead. Thank you for those kind words. Blessings.

      "Forgetting the past, we press on to the mark of the high calling of God." Your poem reminded me of this Scripture. I often in contemplating the day reflect on stupid things I've said or done... what I would give to take those words back but you can't unsay them.... what I would give to take those decisions and actions back but you can't take back anything. They stand in the memory as stains on a white carpet (bad memories amongst good memories). So I usually quote to myself this Scripture and it seems to ease the pain of stupid things I've done. Loved the poem. Thank you Jodah. Bob.
