A Smooth Night At Work

Updated on October 20, 2014

Even Better Than I Expected

One third of my day is put to the test

Where I get to use all my talents

Repeating the same job that I have been doing for the past thirty one years

There have been changes that I had to adapt to

Co-workers have come and gone

I pretend I am in the Army

Where each worker is a new enlisted recruit

I am a seasoned veteran and have earned my stripes

We work together towards a common goal

I keep my distance

Because after training they will be the first to be sent to the frontlines

I try not to get attached because I know some people won't make it

Other people might last a little longer even a few years

All the workers have come for different reasons

Each hoping to earn money and further themselves

For some employees it's their first job

The experienced workers guide and teach them

Helping them learn and adjust to the fast paced environment

Learning the in and the outs

I go up and beyond teaching them short cuts to save them time

My little secrets that have helped me get where I am today

I only have fifteen more years and I can take an early retirement

By then I plan to leave with enough money to do other things with my life

Traveling to different states

Just my wife and I

Sightseeing and filling up each day relaxing

Enjoying the good life

Until now we have little time

Like so many other people trying to squeeze in the most of each day

I have noticed most days all seem to blend

Like adding all kinds of different fruit in

After a few minutes it all looks the same

It is really pretty funny

Because every year I plan and dream

Of this day

When I can leave my bosses and job behind

I left out the tough times purposely

The people I didn't get along with

When I was feeling a little blue and down and out

The times I struggled

Now I know from trial and error

The only things that really count

Are the good times like tonight

When we had fun in work

Tonight the managers treated us nice

They ordered Chinese food for the crew

Thanking us for all our hard work

To this day

I try to analyze every situation

Looking back at all the great times

I push on when others sleep

I focus on the good

I try to tie everything together in a nice package

So one day I will read about my life

Making me feel like anything in life is possible

If I just write about it

It is only a matter of time before it happens

When I worked in NYC I noticed that a lot. If the colleagues I had were a great bunch and management was alright I could do the job and even enjoy my work. However if the situation seemed stressed there was not way I could work without feeling watched every step of the way.
