A Thorn of Penitence: A Poem about Redemption

Young thorns on a honey locust tree; we often seek redemption when we are in pain. Poetry allows us to touch and express that pain.

i spoke with my soul this morning

as I was pulling weeds

thick and thorny,

troubling concept really

that one undetected

could fathom

so much.

a bramble

scratched

a sin escaped,

the usual wadding

tamping it away

must have been missing.

a single sin

identified as indifference,

only that,

and in its absence

I felt lighter,

reprieved

by a thorn of penitence.

It is indeed indifference that differentiates between good and bad, morality is rather futile. Very well written Audrey.

      Audrey,

Your words come from a beautiful mind and loving heart--it's as if an Angel whispered in your ear while you picked your blackberries.

Blackberries always reminds me of my Angel Grandmother Knight. She made the best smelling jelly and jams, and no one in our family can make a cobbler like she did.

Thanks for sharing another piece of your beautiful work.

      Have a great weekend.

      Your Hib Friend,

      Bobbi

Indifference is perhaps man's greatest sin, but then, he is indifferent to it anyway. "and in its absence, I felt lighter" some lines should stay with us, much longer than they do. As always, beautiful!

You're a brave, brave soul, Audrey! More and more are not willing to face the pain of the truth and instead expend futile energy on the 'wadding' - busily 'tamping it away' in the hopes of feeling nothing. Indifference has become epidemic! I can't think of a better word than 'thelyricwriter', so i'll repeat his sentiment: Brilliant, Audrey!
