A Thought Catches
A poem about Alzheimer's
Her cracked fingers
hold the weight of her heavy head
Feeling herself weak
she moves slower
and the wind grows stronger
She braces but the weight
All but pushes her over
And she sits
She sighs
She thinks
Harder this time
But nothing comes
Nothing ever comes
So she waits
For someone to remind her?
For a familiar face?
- a thought catches -
but then as soon as it lands
it is gone again
And like the wind
she releases her thoughts
never to see them
If pain were a symptom of this dread disease
she would be crying out
writhing in agony
Instead
the terror felt
comes back to haunt
me
