A poem, Abandoned ocean cave

Updated on July 24, 2013
always exploring profile image

I am a writer of poetry and fiction. I especially love flash fiction. My name is Ruby, and I live in Southern Illinois. I am a retired R.N.

Source

The whitecaps ripple reflecting memories of past events

There are moments when my mind rushes like a flapping ocean wave

I observe myself staring

While standing in an old abandoned ocean cave

The whitecaps ripple reflecting memories of past events

Like lazy summer nights together

In a hurried pitched tent

Making passionate love, swimming against the swirling current stream

Around and around

As we glide aimlessly downstream

Cooking breakfast on an old makeshift barbecue grill

Hot coffee, bacon and eggs

To get our morning fill

Searching inside the old weathered water soaked cave

Finding names and dates, some very old

Lovers initials lovingly engraved

Then I see a painting of a lovely garden scene

Brings back the aroma of sweet lilac

I used to put in my china figurines

Suddenly I hear a knock on my door.......................

Slowly I leave the ocean cave

And the beautiful decor

I know in my heart of hearts i'll visit again real soon

Happy memories will forever remain hallowed

Surrounding the shallow

Lagoon.

What beautiful images of the travels you take in memory and imagination...wonderful description; I can so relate!! You are so wonderful at painting real pictures that inspires your readers to recall our memories, too. And, being there in memory and fantasy; imagination, is so very real.....and then, brought back to the present by a rap on the door, a ringing phone. Romantic in the broadest sense of the word, whimsical, magical, Ruby! You wander in places that I often frequent...UP Beautiful Awesome

This sounds like youth well spent rather than abandoned. The imagery is captivating, well done. Makes me wonder why anyone comes to my place for breakfast, with such an inviting place as the Abandoned Ocean Cave available.

A fascinating graphic to begin with and then beautiful evocative poetry to accompany it, Ruby. To say nothing of the perfect finishing touch - Elvis. Very imaginative, m'luv.

Speaking of imagination, is that young face in silhouette facing left which is formed by the ocean rushing into the cave entrance - is that you a few years ago when you were in your 20s?

      Hello Ruby;

I’ve been away for awhile due to work and had check in with my favorite authors. When I looked at the photo I was immediately struck at how the opening to the cave is the silhouette of someone’s left profile. This has to be one of your best poems – truly beautiful, Ruby! Your images take us there through the opening portal of memory that beckons so seductively and sweetly. Up and much more. :-)

Beautiful imagery! Beautiful poetry! Beautiful choice of photo and yes, Elvis too...made me sing along to the top of my voice that made my daughter yell from her bedroom, "Mom, you're too LOUD!" Oh, I had the earphones one, lol! "Sorry, I got carried away."

This poem is carrying me away too to the caves, warm waters, ripples, crystal clear mirrors, bats are fine, blue lagoons, scribbles and markings of couples inlove...how I miss all these back home in the Philippines. Your poem flashed memories infront of me. Wonderful, always exploring!

Very surreal style poetry, I love all the visions of that awesomely decorative cave you spoke about, and it felt as if I was there for a brief moment.

This is what makes poetry so powerful and when its written with a flair of brilliance, wow! You definitely have that magic touch with your words Ruby.

Thumbs up and out and I loved the image you chose to use, so figurative and appeals to the imagination.

It was like the cave was some sort of paradise home front of sorts you got me hungry too thinking of a hot barbecue steak which I can no-longer eat LOL, oh so smooth!

Oh Ruby, memories can be so bittersweet. I sometimes yearn the good memories and hold them dear! Being alone in nature, like a cave, makes us be still and your poem brought that out. Can so relate!
