Mary Lu was just a young girl when she got married; she was only sixteen going on seventeen, she barely even knew how to take good care of herself. All she knew she loved Thomas and couldn't resist when he asked her to marry to him. Thomas was ten years older than Mary Lu and he loved her dearly. Mary turned to Thomas and said yes I will marry you but you must ask my papa first, butterflies and lizards started to churn in his stomach.

Tom? Yes, don’t be such a coward I will invited you over for dinner tomorrow night and when mummy and I are doing the dishes you can ask him ok. I will ask my mum and you my dad, so they agreed and did exactly what they had planned the following day. When Mary asked her mother in the kitchen she was in such a shocked she broke few of the dishes dropping them out of her wet hands. What you mean Mary? You are just sixteen years old child what’s the matter with you? Let me hear what your father have to say about this. Meanwhile Thomas and Mary’s dad was in the dining room, Thomas got an instant yes without any hesitation, for a moment he thought it was a joke but Mary’s dad turned and said yes I’ll sign the papers for her to be married, her mum may not agree but I am the man here and I do as I please.

Same time Mary and her mother burst into the dining room and Mary was yelling Papa please say yes and her mother raised her voice, Roland Hitchberry you cannot allow Mary to be married at such a tender age. Roland spun around and said but Martha when you and I marry we were mere kids to, so what the big deal? I am giving my daughter away let her be happy and free. Martha perched he mouth and pouted her lips and she stormed out of the room and into her bedroom.

Thomas and Mary dance and jump with excitement as Roland cheered them on. The next day they were making wedding plans soon enough the wedding day came and they had a nice quiet wedding in Mary Lu’s backyard where they invited few friends and most of their family attended. For Tom and Mary this was an amazing day and a new beginning, they will be turning a new chapter in their lives after their wedding vows are taken.

It was exactly two years after they were married Mary Lu give birth to a handsome bouncing baby boy, the name that was given to him was Chad. He was the splitting image of his father, but had his mother’s skin color being a young couple they was overwhelmed to have their first child.

While at work one day Thomas walked right into and old man who asked him if he could talk to him for just a moment. Thomas responded why not? Let’s have a seat in the cafe next door and you can talk to me, the old man order two cups of black coffee which they sipped on while chatting. This was the first time these two men had ever spoken to each other, finally the old man said son what I really want to do is to sign over my Ranch to you.

Thomas said but why me? You don’t know me and the old man replied you see son I have no children and my wife died many years ago. I have been looking around for a decant young man to give my inheritance to I have twelve acres of land in the far south. Sounds great to me Thomas responded but I can’t accept it. After much pleading and persuading by the old man, Thomas agreed to sign some important documents; they exchanged phone numbers and then went to their destination.

That afternoon Mary Lu was sitting outside on the veranda awaiting her darling husband to arrive home she was singing lullabies to Chad who by then was just six months old. From a distance she saw their horse and buggy coming with full speed towards the house and Thomas was yelling woo woo . He stopped the buggy right in front of the verandah and jump out with a big grin on his face. He ran up to his wife and told her of the incredible news and what had transpired for the day. She too was very happy and started to scream with excitement.

Soon after they went inside the house Mary put Chad into his crib and then she prepared dinner for Thomas and herself. After they had finish eating, they began talking about the old man and how he must be so kind to do something like that. Mary Lu said but Tom you haven’t considered your job, what are you going to do with it? Thomas said he will have to seek advice and see how best things could work out. Later that night Thomas had an idea he would take most of his savings and by animals to rare on the land so that he will still have an income. His wife added that they could also have horse riding classes for persons interested.

The old man will be back to meet Thomas again the following Monday to further discuss how soon would he be able to move south to start living on the Ranch. Soon enough Monday came and they met again, things went smoothly and Thomas assured him no matter what he would be moving in the next two weeks. The old man was very happy as he had no one and longed for someone to keep his company.

The most difficult moment had come when Thomas had to tell his boss that he will be leaving to go south and that he will be sending in his resignation. When Mr. Willford heard that Thomas was leaving he felt very sad as Thomas was one of his best workers, but he knew it must be for a good reason that he will be leaving so sudden. It was finally time for Thomas and his family to leave town to go to live in their new home. All their neighbors bid them farewell as they mounted into their buggy. The house that they once occupied will now be for rent.

Thomas pulled the horse reigns and they sped away down the narrow path until dust alone could be seen in the far distance.
