Scented green,

in late summer heat

(surprising this

late in the season),

a canopy

of stenciled sky

dancing upon overgrown grass

lush with the smell

of moist loam

(I compost and water my weeds).

I contemplate the wildness

of overgrown ivy,

blackberry brambles

(who planted this)

(were they crazy),

knowing that in nine months

all of this

must be cut back

to nub.

But the bees list,

drunken with pollen

by flowering mint

(who knew it flowered),

and I know

that overnight

brambles

will creep

a little further

(I just don’t care today).

Instead, I pour a glass of tea

and settle,

stenciled sky pouring through,

dancing a jig on my book,

and pass

this last

afternoon of August.

Beautiful piece! I look out into the woods now and it is bare and brown. Still beautiful in it's own way. Your poem makes me long for summer again! I love walking in the woods! Voted up and beautiful! :)

I bet it is lovely to be in a cool forest in NJ on a hot day. I grew up on a farm in central WI and I still remember the smell of the soil in the woods, and how quiet and cool it would be, with just the occasional sound of a small creature scurrying or a bird calling. It was so peaceful and nice compared to the heat in the open fields. Wild blackberries grew around the edges of the woods, but the ivy was more likely to be poison!

Lovely poem. It takes me back to the woods on our farm. Voted up and beautiful. Will share . . .

How sweet--the last day of summer must be savored--the rest can wait--rambling bushes or overgrown greens. Very beautifully done and enjoyed this tremendously.

Hi Nellieanna! I live on a small island in the San Francisco bay--Alameda is a man-made island--sort of--but the weather here rarely gets above 80 in the summer---mornings are cool and the fog burns off and the sun comes out--I am truly blessed--hope your day is going well and thank you so much for your visit and comments!

Audrey, just wonderful; what I would give for your way with words....'bees list...drunken with pollen' is wonderful, I can just see their chubby little legs all dusted yellow as they 'list' and the stenciled sky dancing across your book is such a wonderful line (and a wonderful thought). Just lovely.

This is surely the most delightful way to imbibe summer's lingering but dwindling days, Audrey! It's so tongue-in-cheek, along with heart-in-hand! There are as many metaphors and references to things comical and askew as to things dear and beautiful! How can someone squeeze so much into a shortish poem and do it with such relaxed grace and humor? The questioning of inevitabilities of nature to revert, if not 'ridden hard'- are delightful - and especially that freedom of "I just don't care today."

Letting that canopy of stenciled sky filter and pour through, dancing, onto your book, taking leave of its post out on the terrace where compost and water care for the wildness, is just perfect! It matches your sense of freedom from rules.

Mint flowers, huh? Well, I suppose most leafy plants must flower in order to reproduce but who thinks of flowers on plants primarily known for their leaves?

      Ah, so.

I'm caught up in this seasonal transition myself, although mine won't consummate in full autumn anytime very soon. But we've had a respite cool front, and though it's warming back up, it's not soaring into triple digits; and another cool front is forecast for next weekend! I'm enjoying open windows and no a/c, even though it's been in the 90s this afternoon. It's not at all uncomfortable. I even slept under a cozy comforter last night when it reached 59! It's been just a sheet at night for months, even with ceiling fan and a/c in operation.

You're blessed with a much more moderate clime! You must share more about it!
